THIS THREAD WAS ORIGINALLY SETUP FOR THE TOUR OF FRANCE. IT'S BEEN HIJACKED.

Wow! What a tour for GB and Team Sky. What a lead in for the Olympics as well.

Cycling has peaked incredibly high for us, it can't get any better than this right now.

Probably one of, if not, the proudest moment in 20+ years of watching sports for me.

Alle, alle, alle!!!!!

A below average tour from a spectators point of view but an amazing performance from Wiggins even if he did have to suffer the humiliation of his own team-mate appearing to be a lot stronger than him in the mountains. Sky just dominated the race - one of the most crushing team performances I've ever seen but luckily Contador and Andy Schleck will be back next year to give the race some life on the climbs.

Highlights of 2012 edition: Sagan's winning celebrations, the general greatness of Thomas Voeckler, Wiggins bossing the time trials and cutting epic post race promos, Cavendish winning in style on the Champs Elysees, Froome asking Wiggins to catch up with him as he rode effortlessly away from his own team leader.

Lowlights of 2012 edition: Age catching up with Evans, Sky soft pedalling up mountains with no-one strong enough to offer up a challenge, Crappy Mountain stages where the hardest climbs were placed in the middle as opposed to the end, so many quality riders crashing in the first week.

The 100th edition will hopefully feature a more balanced parcours.

No doubt the field wasn't as strong, and as a neutral it might not have hit the highs, the stages were certainly strangely paced, and so many crashing out early was a shame. Still, it was highly enjoyable as a fan of GB cycling. Now the heat is on to put up a good fight vs Bertie et al at the Vuelta.

Maybe a specific cycling thread would be worth a try? I don't see one about, although i don't know if the interest is here???

I'd be well up for that and very active even if it was only a few of us discussing stuff.

Also anyone who wants to see cycling at its most exhilerating should catch highlights of todays Vuelta mountain stage. Contador went absolutely mental.

He's a joy to watch, it's hard not to support him. We've been waiting for this kind of riding on the front, it's shaping up to be a good tour. Hopefully, from my POV anyway, Froome has enough to go with Bertie, especially, and makes this a real battle.

I would love to discuss cycling here in a thread, maybe we should start one and see if anybody else wants to join in?

Yeah basically all the exciting climbers have come to this Vuelta from Rodriguez to Froome to Contador to Anton to Cunego to Cobo. Shaping up to be an incredible race which is desperately needed after what I thought was a dissapointing Giro and Tour De France.

Yeah, as much as i've loved watching Sky/GB Cycling step up on the road, sadly it has been against somewhat weakened fields. We've made some history in that time though, thankfully. Now, i'm more than glad we aren't going to have things all our own way, and have to prove ourselves vs bigger tests from here on in, next season, and beyond.

I'd trade us continuing to do so well if it means we are going to get stronger races and more competitive riding. I'd just love to see us put up good fights and hold our own against the very best. There's a way to go at la vuelta and a few guys who could be challenging, a lot of talk is about Contador/Froome, but those are the two i would most like to see contesting at the end more than any others.

I think Rodriguez will really suit this parcours especially with the hilly time trial and he might be less fatigued than Froome and Contador having skipped the Tour De France. Definitely the dark horse of this race.

Okay, as a disclaimer before we go any further, you may have noticed already, i'm not exactly an expert on this, lol. I watched the TDF many years growing up but then fell out of love around/after the L.A dominance. It's only recently since GB have a serious team now in Sky that i've came back to watching regularly, and i still have a lot to learn and catch up on. So, just like with wrestling, i'm going to pretend to know what i'm talking about until i actually do. Please, (feel free to) correct me where necessary. BTW, I've sent a PM to the mods asking to change the thread title to The Cycling Discussion Thread.

OT: It's seeming that way, didn't he start well last year too at la vuelta but faded away by the end? He's again put his focus here and again looks in good form this year, with a good record on Spanish roads obviously. He's been promising a big win for a while it seems. A push for the podium seems likely. What with those two having had a lot/and not a lot of riding lately, it was always on the cards that some others were going to come to the fore, and it was likely to be one of the Spaniards. Shame about Valverde today though. Yet another reason people are going to hate Sky.

Seems Movistar are showing clips of the crash to the race officials right now, even if they didn't cause it, they are taking stick for carrying on, even though Valverde has form for doing the same at Vuelta?
