So, there have been a couple of threads lately about our Mount Rushmore of wrestlers, our heroes, etc... and I think it would be cool to make one for sports.
I'm curious about the athletes who would make your Mount Rushmore. To make it more fun you can make one for sports in general, and another one for your favorite sport.
Sports:
Valentino Rossi
Roger Federer
Ronaldinho
Usain Bolt
Steve Yzerman, Gordie Howe, Mike Illitch, & Al Kaline.
honorable mentions:
Maggilo Ordonez
Miguel Cabrera
Justin Verlander
Nicklas Lindstrom
Darren McCarty
Bob Probert
Panel Datsyuk
Chris Osgood
Brendan Shanahan
Charlie Gehringer
Ty Cobb
Alan Trammel
Hank Greenberg
Barry Sanders
Bill Lambier
Isiah Thomas
Ben Wallace
Chauncey Billups
MMA
Jon Jones - The things that this very young man is capable of, blows my mind. His list of opponents blows all others out of the water.
Ronda Rousey - Sue me! She's my favorite female fighter. She's never boring and love her or hate her, she's a legit superstar athlete.
Anderson Silva - GOAT MMA fighter right now. Only one who comes close is, Jones, but he needs to grow the fuck up.
Forrest Griffin - It'd be cheating to lump the whole TUF 1 cast here so I say Griffin. Griffin vs Bonnar saved UFC. But not only that, they put it on the map with Spike tv. Without that season, without that fight, UFC wouldn't exist, period.
NFL - not that I watch all the time....
Tom Brady - 5 Rings!
Tony Dungy - 1st black head coach to win the SuperBowl
Lawrence Taylor - Everyone says he's the greatest to this day. Plus he main evented Mania!
Barry Sanders - Couldn't be touched, but never got to the Bowl.....Damned Lions
@obby m8 pls you are severely underrating Hasek and overrating Brodeur IMO
Hasek has more MVPs (they have 0; he has 2) and almost as many Vezina's as Roy and Brodeur have combined (they have 7; he has 6).
He did it all playing with half the support Roy and Brodeur did. Imagine him playing with that Devil's defense in front of him -or- playing with the offensive support of those Avs teams. At least with Roy one can point to his 3 Conn Smythe trophies; Marty never won one.
Ali, Jordan, Gretzky, Bonds, greatest of all-time.
My personal favorites NBA Mt Rushmore: Vince Carter, Drazen Petrovic, Moses Malone, David Thompson
My personal faves MLB: Roy Halladay, THE BIG FUCK, Gregg Maddux, Mariano Rivera
My personal faves NHL: Mario Lemeiux, Jaromir Jagr, Steve Yzerman, Sergei Fedorov (honorary spot for Paul Coffee)
NFL: Ladanian Tomilinson, Earl Campbell, Barry Sanders, Adrian Peterson
Any MMA list with out Anderson Silva is sorely lacking.
Ronaldinho
CR7
Fat Ronaldo
Zlatan
Messi
Gareth Bale
Gigi Buffon
Frank Lampard (had to throw an English name in there and I loved lamps)
No particular order. There's probably a fuck load of others to add to that list and If we are talking sports in general id probably say names like Conor McGregor and so on.
Michael Jordan
Wilt Chamberlain
George Mikan
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar
I didn't go with who I thought was the best players (other than Jordan, but that's hardly even a debatable topic), but I went with the guys that I thought were either pioneers or accomplished feats that are historically significant to the sport. Mikan was one of the first stars of the sport, and rule changes were made to limit his effectiveness. Kareem has the most points all-time. Wilt smashed all kinds of records, Jordan the same.
I think you could make arguments for some other guys, but this is what my Mt. Rushmore of the NBA would look like.
Well, I'll do one for Basketball too seeing as I've finally been trying to get into NBA since December, and I'm absolutely loving the sport. I actually just finished watching the Dream Team documentary about an hour ago.
My favorite Basketball players:
Michael Jordan
Kobe Bryant
Dirk Nowitzki
Vince Carter
Brodeuer's incredible consistency (eight forty win seasons, 12 straight 30 win seasons, all time win leader, all time shutout leader) is unparalleled doe. And while he does have four Vezina's to Hasek's six, he also has five Jennings' to Hasek's three. At the very least I think he deserves to be in the conversation :draper2
Since in America Football, Baseball, Basketball, and Hockey are the major sports I will pick one person from each sport.
Football
Jerry Rice. His reception record and most of his receiving records may never be broken. This was a really hard choice, but he played two decades and won 5 Super Bowls with two different QB's. He is the greatest player to ever player at his position and it's not even close. I chose Rice because his records will likely stand longer than any other offensive and defensive player of the modern, or past eras. Even take into consideration that the league has progressed to a passing league. Imagine if he played today?
Baseball
Hank Aaron. Is the only choice. He has the most Home runs, and is 3rd all time on the hit list. You can't ask for a better player to swing a bat. Hank broke barriers and is a true legend. Everything he did was without steroids. That's just unheard of and definitely amazing. He is the greatest baseball player that ever played in Major League Baseball. I think most of you should already be aware of this. It may not be fact, but it's damn close.
Hockey
Mario Lemieux is the greatest hockey player of all time. Gretzky was great, but had Mario been healthy Wayne's records would have been shattered. People forget that Gretzky played with many other younger stars who would become legends on their own. Lemieux carried the Penguins when they were an awful team. He came back from Cancer and won the scoring title. Who does that? I don't care about how many total points he has. He was the greatest player of all time.
Basketball
Michael Jordan. Call it bias because I have been a long time Bulls fan, for life. Jordan made me watch the game. Jordan did things on the court and it looked like magic. He was the greatest basketball player I have ever watched. There are great players and then there is Michael Jordan. Jordan was the most competitive man I have ever watched to play any sport. I don't think anyone hated losing more than him. Air Jordan has to be up on the Rushmore.
