Best unsung footballers of 2000

Me and my flatmates were talking about old Arsenal players from back in like 2002 and this is how this thread was born. So this thread is remembering the best footballers of 2000 who are maybe retired or are lowkey now. Just name your favourite.

One of my favourite players I forgot about was Pavel Nedved. He retired in 2009 and I thought he may have fallen off the radar about towards the end? Maybe not, I just don't recall hearing much hype about him towards the end. Obviously a class, two footed player and Serie A don't really have players like him anymore imo.

This should be the unsung best players of the 2000's to eliminate the obvious posts.

Zanetti and Ballack are two who don't seem to get massive amounts of praise, although I'm sure everyone knows how good they are/were.

Ballack

I'd like to throw Deco's name in there. From 03-07 he was magical.

Edit: I actully forgot he played for us until a few seconds after posting that.

Edit2: Staying with the Portuguese play-a-maker theme; Rui Costa.

Hasselbaink was another who was better than he was often given credit for.

Ruud Van Nistelrooy around 2002-3 was a beast. And ofc, Francesco Totti around 2000 was having his best year.

Roy Makaay was a predator. Just goal after goal.

He's regarded as the greatest player and human to ever walk the earth though, so he's not really unsung.

Re: Best unsung footballers of 2000

Lilian Thuram for generally being overshadowed by other star names in the great French national side. Absolute tank of a defender who won quite a few titles with Juve (although some were taken away because of the betting scandal controversy).

Gary Neville for being a fairly quiet but consistently effective right back for United in a decade where they won a lot of league titles.

Brad Friedel for being one of the most consistent keepers of the decade for unglamorous sides where he often had his work cut out. He didn't miss many games either. An absolute top professional.

Jan Koller, often regarded as a donkey and a clogger, but his goalscoring record was very good for the most part. He was also an absolute colossus for the Czech Republic in international tournament qualifying campaigns.
