Simply because Smackdown affords more creative freedom. I think he could say and do more on Smackdown than he can get away with on RAW. He'll never be a top star on RAW anyway, it'll always be Cena. He might as well switch with Randy or Sheamus.
Smackdown is also a wrestling oriented show that won't be preempted by "returning legends" and that type of shit. I know they probably won't move him but he needs to.

Considering it's well known that Punk never follows the script and just says whatever the hell he wants ANYWAY, I'm not sure how you've come to that conclusion. In fact, SmackDown is just as watered down as Raw, if not more so. I'm pretty sure the fake heart attack angle was on Raw, not SmackDown, and that's the edgiest thing WWE has done in a long time.

He already IS a top star, he just isn't THE top star. Are you telling me that Cena is the only star on Raw? Because Punk is clearly the #2 guy in the company. He's far more of a star than Orton or Sheamus, and being on SmackDown in and of itself makes you less of a star. Orton isn't even a star anymore, he's a geek in the midcard. What are you talking about? This would be a gigantic demotion.

I'm assuming you mean Rock. Being in the ring with Rock is the rub of a lifetime. Being on SmackDown would be spitting in his face.
After reading this, I've come to the conclusion that you're not actually a Punk fan. Either that, or you somehow think demotions are pushes and pushes are demotions, because that mentality is in full effect here.

Not totally, Vince still smudges everything. He probably has some leeway but there's no way he's doing his own thing in totality out there.

Yes he is #2, as was Randy Orton when he was moved to Smackdown (his personal issues is why he is a "geek in the midcard"). So was Edge during his last run. You can be a top guy on Smackdown as Undertaker proved for almost 10 years. He'll undoubtedly be the focal point of the Smackdown program as he'll be the biggest star on it AND because Vince doesn't monitor Smackdown as closely he should be able to pull more strings.

Not just Rock, but Brock, Shawn, HHH, Vince, Undertaker or whoever else decides to eat up 30mins of RAW at any given time. Getting rubs is cool but he can get himself over (and has) without rubs like that...and besides SD guys are on RAW all the time. My point is the one year run on RAW solidifies him, after losing the title he's gotta go down the card anyway.

Smackdown is a traditional wrestling show (which fits Punk's style more). More matches, more time dedicated to the top guys, that's what he needs really. He's just now in the later part of a one year title run really getting some good burn. I don't see the problem with going from #2 guy on RAW to #1 guy on Smackdown. Why wouldn't you want Punk as Smackdown's franchise player? You think he doesn't want to be the focal point of a program? The only real knock is that he won't be closing PPVs but he just started doing that in August so its not like he's not used to it.
The brand split is over and has been for so long now. It amazes me that people still seem to think it exists just because top stars don't appear on Smackdown very often. Cena has done so more in recent weeks, but usually Cena and Punk aren't on it.

Maybe the reason why Punk appearances is mostly on RAW just because as the WWE champions, he gets the rights to get more rest than the other. Wretle only one time a week..
