Re: LIVE, ONGOING COVERAGE FROM TONIGHT'S SMACKDOWN TAPING IN PHILADELPHIA
The whole premise of being credible is too overblown. Punk was about as credible as Snitsky's dentist when he won the WHC.
I don't believe that HHH/Khali will draw as much, at least in the U.S.A, as much as people think. I know casuals, and they see face/face matches as the ones worth paying for. They don't appreciate the finer dynamics that the more educated fans do.
If we are going to continue the flip side debate, here's an alternate angle. You say MVP being in the main event is unjustified due to his lack of credibility. I would argue that being in the ME GIVES him credibility. Its a battle royale; all MVP has to do is stay outside the ring and dump Jeff Hardy over from nowhere to win. Its pretty clear SD aren't looking at this match to draw or they would have thrown Big Show in there. Edge was a title contender when he never went over anyone clean and won Battle royales in similar fashion.
Anyways, onto a brief SD review. Not a great episode.
SD Review:
- MVP/Jeff was a pretty good opening segment. It was all real and Jeff took it well I thought. His sincerity remains to be seen, and his performance on the mic was limited but acceptable. MVP wasn't at his phenomenal best but was still quite impressive. Nice way to open a feud and the show.
- Benjamin is getting some very nice heat and cuts an acceptable promo before his match. I will be quite honest, Jeff and Shelton are both heavily criticized for their mic work but both were acceptable tonight. His "Ain't no stopping me noooooooooooooooow" slogan to finish drew a lot of heat. The actual match was a short squash. Shelton hit the Pay Dirt, but it wasn't the greatest variation of the finisher. I re-iterate it shouldn't be an out-of-nowhere type move. Regardless, ok short match. (1/2*).
- Festus/Hawkins was another "ok" squash. Festus just displayed his power and won easily with the Fireman's carry flapjack. Post match beatdown courtesy of the Edgeheads after the bell rang. Nothing vicious, cheap unsustained heat. (1/2*)
- Kozlov/Richards was a boring squash. (1/4*). Headbutt is an awesome finisher. Well not really, but its pretty hilarious.
- Battle royale was not great at all. MVP being first to go sucked, and seeing Umaga go second was a surprise. Kennedy soon followed. Kennedy continues to get nice crowd reactions pre-match. Umaga's superkicks on his fellow giants were pretty sweet. Show hit a nice toss on Jeff Hardy, but Hardy jumped from the top rope to get caught on Show's shoulders. Show went to dump him outside the ring, but Hardy reversed it into a hurricanara and eliminated Show. Hardy hit the Swanton and low blow on Khali to no avail and eventually got thrown out. (*1/4).
- Maryse has no concept of how to wrestle. Michelle with the heel hook in a very mediocre match serving no purpose but to make her look strong. (1/4*).
- I missed Kendrick/Moore. Apparently it was a 15 minute classic. Not. Another squash.
- Final segment was pretty ok. I thought Edge wasn't at his greatest on the mic but given the circumstances its accpetable. Crowd didn't give as big of a pop as I thought it would, but they gave a pretty long ovation. They popped for the HIAC announcement though. GOod final segment to end a pretty terrible SD.

Re: LIVE, ONGOING COVERAGE FROM TONIGHT'S SMACKDOWN TAPING IN PHILADELPHIA
Just seen the Hardy/MVP segment, and you can't accuse WWE or Jeff Hardy of trying to avoid or sweep his suspension under the carpet, and even acknowledging the fact he will be fired if he fails again, the dog reference wasn't really needed in my opinion, but i assume Jeff gave the green light.
One more thing i noticed Jeff Hardy is mega over in smarkville, USA which makes me wonder where all these haters come from on this forum, because Hardy is over like a motherfucker in the smarkiest of towns New York & Philly.

I think that Jeff Hardy will be World Champion next year (early next year) if he stays clean, which I believe he will stay clean. Jeff is smart enough to know that this is his last chance and he's not going to mess this up.

Punk is an extreme exception because WWE wanted to "shake things up". Had they not felt the need to shake things up, Punk would have likely been built up properly and then eventually capture the World Championship. There are no comparison between MVP and Punk.
You're kidding yourself if you don't think casuals will eat this feud/match up. Hell, they ate up the Khali/Cena match big time and even Taker/Khali.
If he were to win the battle royal that way, how does that build credibility? That just tells the fans that MVP wasn't as good as the rest of the battle royal participants so he had to cheat. An angle like that only works if the guy is already an established title contender (i.e. when Edge won that battle royal a couple months back). The only way not to make MVP into a laughable title contender is to give him proper build.

Well watching them acknowledge his suspension they seem to be laying the foundations for an overcoming his demons storyline, which is a little risky for WWE to say the least.
If it works and Jeff stays clean, it will be a huge storyline for WWE, winning the WWE title his boyhood dream whilst overcoming his personal demons, they could do huge business from that.
On the flipside if Jeff does fuck up again, then it really is going to look bad on WWE, because they are pushing this redemption story with Jeff pretty hard.

I'm thinking WWE will run with this Hardy storyline into Mania next year where he'll win MITB and then go onto win whichever title at Summerslam.

Re: LIVE, ONGOING COVERAGE FROM TONIGHT'S SMACKDOWN TAPING IN PHILADELPHIA
Jeff eliminating Big Show (which looked impressive) popped the crowd huge, and they were going nuts in anticipation for Jeff to somehow eliminate Great Khali, the whole crowd was expecting it to happen, it looked like Jeff was going to go over huge and have some great momentum and then Khali just slaps a big chop on him then dumps Jeff out of the ring and absolutely kills the crowd dead.
The lads face of utter dismay in the crowd at the end was priceless.
I just dont know what to think.

In my perfect Hardy mark world, and as much as many would hate it on here, him winning the Rumble and going on to win the title at Wrestlemania would be the perfect scenario, and would be one hell of a story.
I know its never going to happen because i dont think they would trust Hardy in a million years with the Rumble win and Wrestlemania main event, but i can always hope.

Re: LIVE, ONGOING COVERAGE FROM TONIGHT'S SMACKDOWN TAPING IN PHILADELPHIA
The WWE is saving Hardy vs. Hunter for the WWE Championship for one of the lesser pay per views, so that it can get more buyrates. If there weren't any plans for Hell in a Cell between Edge and Taker, then Hardy vs. The Game at Summerslam would have made sense.
