Top Five Favorite Smackdown Matches
Smackdown is getting closer and closer to its 10th anniversary, and I thought it'd be cool to look back and see what your favorite matches were.
Mine are:
5) JBL vs. The Undertaker vs. Muhammed Hassan vs. Christian vs. Booker T vs. Chris Benoit - 6 Pac Challenge to Crown 1st SD Champion - This was during the draft in 2005. In the draft, SD picked up Christian & a superstar to be named at the end of the show. This main event was just a lot of fun. It was an elimination match, so it took up a lot of time and it provided a lot of action and excitement for this particular episode. All six guys added something to the match, and they did some things I didn't expect, like having Taker be the first one eliminated, and having it close with JBL & Christian. I thought they might swerve us and have Chrisitan win, but JBL managed to sneak one in, but was not awarded the new SD Championship since it was no longer needed as World Heavyweight Champion Batista was announced as being the final draft pick. That was a huge shocked to close the show with, and it really felt like Smackdown hit the jackpot. In mid-late 2005, I felt that Smackdown was vastly better than Raw, and this match & Batista's arrival were the start of it.
4) JBL vs. Chris Benoit: Steel Cage Match 2006 - I remember James and I talking about how great a match these two could have had at Wrestlemania had they been allowed to do so. Well this match was simply amazing, and they probably should have had this match at Mania (would have been better than that crappy Cena/HHH match that took up almost the entire final hour of the show) This was a great old school cage match, and both guys did their usual work to make the match great. They actually showed this match on the Chris Benoit Tribute Raw (bet their sorry they did that show huh?) and it deserved to be. It was a hell of a match.
3) Steve Austin vs. Chris Benoit - 2001 - This match took place in Edmonton, Benoit's home town, so the crowd was jacked for it. It was such a fabulous match up that I honestly thought that Benoit might actually win the title off of Stone Cold. He didn't, which was a major disappointment, but it was a great match all the same.
2) JBL vs. Eddie Gurrero: Steel Cage Match from June 2004 - I loved this feud, and I loved their matches. That was the bread and butter for SD in this time period, and they never disappointed. I will always say that the J-Day match is the best, but this one is pretty high up there too. I hold the matches from this feud as JBL's best and believe it or not some of Eddie's best as well, at least his best from the WWE. The sight of Eddie doing a Frog Splash off the cage was pretty amazing.
1) Kurt Angle vs. The Undertaker from Sept 2003 - You want a forgotten classic? Here you go. I was so happy that they put this on The Undertaker DVD because it deserves to be on there. It was a match that proved that The Undertaker can go hold for hold with anybody, even Angle. Both guys looked great in there, and there were so many times where I thought the match was over (I thought for sure Taker was gonna tap at least 3 times) They hyped the hell out of this match and it was fucking amazing. Only knock on it is that Brock Lesnar came in and knocked both guys out giving us a Double DQ, but both guys were such big babyfaces, it was almost like you didn't want anybody to lose. Michael Cole had a great line though: "We were witnessing what was easily one of the greatest matches of the year, and it was ruined by Brock Lesnar!" That might have been a shoot comment.
