Let's start with the WWE title picture. Styles had a pretty good run with the title and then he dropped it to Cena, who had a 2 week run with the title. Then Wyatt won it and went on to do nothing as champion except lose it in a horrible match at WM to Orton. Orton did nothing as champ except lose it to Jinder. I guess we'll have to wait and see how he does as champ but the WWE title picture has gone downhill since Wyatt won it.
And then there's the midcard titles. The Miz was a pretty good intercontinental champion and had a good feud with Ziggler but then Ambrose won it and did nothing with it. The midcard does seem to be picking up some steam though with KO as US champ.
The Heath Slater and Rhyno storyline was really good and having them win the titles at Backlash 2016 was the right decision IMO. But they held onto the titles for to long, they should have dropped them to the Usos at No Mercy. Instead, the Wyatt Family won the titles but lost them after a couple of weeks to American Alpha. AA barely did anything as champs and weren't even on TV some weeks. The tag title scene does seem to be picking up some steam with the Usos as champs though.
The women's division has gone downhill ever since Backlash 2016. Becky winning the title was great but then they had her job to Alexa. Alexa then lost the title to Naomi, who got injured and had to vacate it. Alexa won it back and then Naomi won it again at WM in a clusterfuck multi-women match. Naomi has barely done anything as champ and it looks like WWE is going to go with Charlotte as the top face for the women on SD, which seems to me like a big mistake.
Am I the only one that feels like the whole Wyatt Family angle was just poorly executed on every facet? I mean, I feel as if Orton/Wyatt should've been a summer feud, I really enjoyed their run as Smackdown Tag Champs. It was when they dropped it to American Alpha the tag division fell into shambles. The main event scene suffered after Cena won the strap off Styles, it should've never happened. Simple as that. Styles should've retained all the way through Mania season where then, he drops it to either Cena OR Orton. That way with Orton, you could have the fact he's the WWE Champion and Tag Champion, while the supposed leader can't boast the same thing. The tension would've felt way more natural than it did. Even after that, Styles should've stayed in the main event scene.
Don't even get me started on the women's division, I've said it before and I'll say it once again, but we got a preview of the type of quality to expect during Backlash 2016. That match continues to be overrated till this day.
That being said, Smackdown is clearly rectifying 2 of their problems: The tag division and women's division. Breezango has been a breath of fresh air, while the Uso's haven't looked better. Charlotte has been the much needed shot in the arm and despite the poor outing last week by all women, I still see great potential with this talent pool. People also sleep on how well Carmella has developed, Ellsworth has helped tremendously with her character work and her confidence on the microphone. Naomi is coming into her own as champion, and I'm still holding out hope that Tamina becomes relevant. SD's women's divison could use a monster heel.
The midcard hasn't looked better if you ask me, you got Styles, Nakamura, Owens, and Ziggler all tangling it up. Add in Sami Zayn and Baron Corbin before Corbin graduates to the main event, thats a shit load of quality.
Whilst it's not as good as the 6 months post brandsplit but I thought this last week was a very entertaining show, didn't skip anything. Maybe it was the crowd being really into the whole show.
- Taken Styles out of the main event.
- Lack of John Cena.
- Lack of proper mid-carders.
- Lack of roster depth.
The show is more bearable simply because it's an hour less. I like the fact they're trying to develop characters like Jinder and Breezango and I hope they try and do more with the rest of the roster.
They only have 1 problem and it's called lack of continuity. Also it's not wrestlers fault if Creative... who's supposed to be you know... creative, doesn't give any creative ideas. F.e Ambrose's titlereign was pretty bland in SD. I thought he'd drop the title to Corbin, but apparently someone in Creative forgot and then remembered last second there's IC titlematch on card.. gave them a weak segment on talking smack and then put them on pre-show. And on top of that, the fuckers made a rematch... WITH stipulation... WITHOUT the title. Like how can you butcher the feud any worse?
Slater/Rhyno tag-title hunt was entertaining, it had a story in it. I'm not surprised however that after they won the titles the creative fell flat on their ass because no one knows how to build continuity.
Well most people put all the blame on Orton. You could too.
Or maybe you could see that they are experimenting all their crappy gimmicks and ideas on smackdown.
If AJ styles is as great as people say, he could make a midcard feud great.Well miz did.
