AJ won the WWE championship. Becky won the SD women's championship. Heath Slater and Rhyno won the SD tag team championship. It was a great PPV.
Now we have Randy Boreton as WWE champion, they proceeded to job Becky out and give her a horrible title run, and Heath Slater and Rhyno faded into obscurity and the tag-team division sucks.
Yeah I agree, IMO the best time for SDL was during the buildup to No mercy, that was when everything was hot. Ambrose/Styles/Cena were killing it. Miz/Ziggler proving to everyone that they can be the real deal and tore the house down. The tag team division and womens division wasnt shit. It was jsut a good time being a SDL fan.
It'll go in cycles. We're just coming off WM so right now a lot of new feuds are trying to catch their footing and with the draft it kind of made things confusing. I think starting next month we'll see a lot better stuff and this summer should be great.
Yeah. Backlash 2016 was a happier time for Smackdown. It was good up to No Mercy as well. After that it lost some steam but I still thought it was good overall.
Even though The Shake-Up has really made people disillusioned to SD I do think that After Payback it'll settle into it's groove and get better.
For me it was at its best when AJ styles and Ambrose were feuding, and both had beaten part timers like Cena. Right now its not so bad, you have AJ styles as the number 1 contender for the US title, and Charlotte making the women's division interesting again.
I agree with Phenom and Raw Smackdown above. It's just a matter of a few weeks and SDL will be back to normal.
I have hope for the tag division this time around though. New Day will give it serious credibility. Maybe American Alpha can start anew and try out a heel turn, it couldn't hurt. And surely DIY will be called up some time in the next few months. The Colons and Ascension are decent enhancement talent.
The only thing that has hurt Smackdown recently is centering the title around Orton and Bray. I believe had they left the title out of that storyline it would have been best for all parties involved.
I just had another thought, too. Smackdown was on fire September to December 2016. WWE product is notorious for being shit during football fall season. That's pretty awesome that Smackdown was a four to five star show consistently throughout the fall. Maybe that explains why Raw was bad, being on Monday nights and all, haha.
You can pin point the time SD start going downhill when they beat RAW in the ratings, As soon as that happened Taker got switched over to RAW, Triple H came back along with Brock and Goldberg came back and SD started to have cluster tag team turmoil matches
Yep during the time Ambrose was being booked nicely, Styles/Ambrose fued, Styles as champion, Becky as main face of the division, Wyatt being built back up before they fucked him up again at Wrestlemania... that legitimately brilliant Miz/Ziggler programme... times were good back than, man.
Huh, there's a lot of optimism in this thread, I feel like I'm not on WF :hmmm. Anywho, just like everyone said, things sure will pick up soon and I'm excited for it!
The real funny part is that some people thought Smackdown would be great forever. I guess now we are realising that it's still part of the WWE and nothing good lasts forever.
It was strong but it showed a depth problem that reared its ugly by WM. We were reduced to Shane McMahon getting a WM singles match, the biggest star in the company(Cena) in a throwaway mixed tag, no tag team title match (not even on the kickoff show), the main midcard feud being on the kickoff show, and a clusterfuck multi-women match since Alexa and Becky's feud had run its course.
I think SDL will be fine. Still lots of good talent there. Styles is still there, Charlotte's there, the New Day. Owens, Rusev, Nakamura's music.
