Default Sheamus deserves more respect

**If you bother reading please understand I mean him as a wrestler. It's easy and expected to respect someone for putting their body on the line just for entertainment purposes, but do you respect how he does it?**

While watching the WWE MITB ladder match at Money in the Bank, I was honestly astounded by the amount of damage Sheamus took for the guy who seemed to be one of what you could consider, the two jobbers (Christian being the other) of the match.

When I compared this to the reaction he got with his entrance, it made me realise that Sheamus gets a huge lack of respect for his ring work.

Comparable to Cena, where his babyface shtick is the usual ready-to-fight, overly happy guy who goes over way too many people way too often, I think he's way more bearable. He may always try to pick fights much like Cena, but at least his matches prove that he can do it. Unlike Cena, he gets an incredible amount of offense in on any of his opponents; proving that he can brawl, so in my opinion, his gimmick is partially passable.

So after you get past the family friendly, typical, boring face shtick, and get to the wrestling performance, it's hard to deny that Sheamus deserves better thoughts than what he gets here.

First, let's remember that people change. Comparable to Alberto Del Rio, The Sheamus that originally debuted and almost instantly got a WWE championship was in late 2009. There's a bad stigma about him because he's backstage friends/training buddies with Triple H, and people assume (rightfully; it's fairly likely) that he only got his push to the top so quick because of it.

After his lackluster, unexpected and undeserved world title status, he dropped down into the mid card when he won the US title. Unlike Del Rio, he had some time in the lower cards. He even missed the card for WrestleMania at this time - taking the dark match spot with Bryan.

Now, I don't want this to be a history class or anything - I just want to state that though he started in a position he didn't necessarily deserve at the time, he spent some time under it and has through the years proven that though he didn't deserve to be shotgunned into the position straight away, he certainly deserves it now.

So after you get past the first, excessive and unwarranted heel run, and get to the wrestling performance, it's hard to deny Sheamus deserves better thoughts than what he gets here.

2012 was basically the year of the Celtic Warrior. Winning the Royal Rumble, cementing himself in history with an eighteen second World Heavyweight Championship winning match at WrestleMania, and having great matches each PPV since, I think that it's only fair that I try to explain why I think Sheamus deserves more respect.

Sheamus' 2012 and 2013 Royal Rumble appearances were both good. Though he didn't win the latter, he showed capability, and though I think other performers should've won it, he did prove that he deserved another chance at the top (or near the top depending on your thoughts on the WHC).

Extreme Rules showed a two-out-of-three-falls match, where he defended against Bryan. Sheamus unexpectedly had a bit of trouble against Bryan and only really won because Bryan disqualified himself. This showed me that Sheamus, in my mind, is a very good performer; especially in back and forth matches.
The main thing in this match and a few weeks after it was the arm injury that Sheamus was selling from early-in, for a few more weeks. Showing vulnerability, experience and psychology beyond what I honestly expected from him.

After this the matches weren't as eye-opening as the Extreme Rules one was; until his match with Big Show which he lost, and with that, the world title. The match was back and forth, and broke so many expectations by not only myself - but a lot of fans, and a lot of you. (I do remember seeing a lot of people saying that it was a MOTY candidate back at that time!)

One more match comes to mind, and that was against Cesaro in late November (I think). An incredible match with two brawlers pitted against each other was bound to be a fairly average match, right?
Wrong! This match was WrestleMania worthy. In fact, it was WWE championship WrestleMania main event match worthy, in my eyes. But that could be bias...
Unfortunately it seems that backstage authorities have fallen in love for Cesaro so we wouldn't see a better, longer version of this match with a world title on the line.

Now we get to Sunday's MITB match. Everyone in that match took a beating, with Punk seemingly coming out the most brutalized with that huge gash on his head. But, Sheamus did take a few bumps himself, and all of them looked like they really hurt. The fact that he came back after being beaten pretty hard with just as much ferocity shows he really is tough.
Punk's inverted seated senton on the ladder truly made it look like Sheamus' face was damaged, and I think he got a gash from it(?).
The last spot - through the wooden () ladder was another fairly respectable spot.
RVD pushing the ladder too fast underneath him was obviously a heavy botch and really could've did some serious damage. Obviously Sheamus came back a little rattled and angry, but he did come back. And professionally.
Nothing super extreme or anything, but all were definitely noteworthy.

All in all, I don't want to seem like I'm pushing Sheamus to be a liked character, because honestly, his gimmick is beyond enraging. I truly, truly dislike his gimmick; but when you ignore it, you realise that he's a very capable individual. I just think that Sheamus is labelled too much based on his gimmick than he is his stellar ring work. He's not the greatest, but he is definitely better than a lot of people like to think he is.

Like? No...

Respect? Yes...

Anyone that sacrifices their health, family life and career to entertain fans gets my respect. Sheamus also does lots of charitable work, including anti-bullying and Make A Wish.

Oh I totally respect him. The dude took a few nasty bumps but overall he really hasn't given me a reason not to.

I'm not overly big on his character but that's no reason to not respect him.

Very few wrestlers that I don't respect.

Exactly. Any wrestler should be respected based on what they do for the fans. Don't just say NO without an explanation.

He's a reasonable talent but his character is horrible and that's the most important aspect of pro wrestling, so no, I don't really respect him. He should change his shit up because at the moment he's excruciating to watch.
