Sure when there's someone else with the mic helping him out (like the Rock or Punk) Cena is ok, but he can't cut a promo alone without any help. For a top guy you'd expect more.
It's the same promo over and over again. What's worse is he tries to cut a serious promo but always has to add in his dumb humor like this past Raws "Dwayne's johnson" comment. Also the cheap pops he tries to get every city is getting real old. I used to be fine with cena but in a span of just a little over a year he has grown so stale on me. I don't know how he can't want a change. Can someone really be that complacent when their super hero face character is getting boo'd out of every arena? If there is no heel turn in a near future he will commit character suicide.
Honestly? He's not even trying to cut good promos now and days.
In the past Cena cut legendary promos especially back in his Thuganomics days but over the past few years and especially recently I feel it's been pretty obvious now that he doesn't give shit anymore. I think the boos as well the horrible booking decisions have all finally gotten to him which is why I believe he tanked his promo on purpose this past monday.
i think the problem is hes a face and basically nobody (outside of little kids) actually wants him to win this fued, for him to get his 'redemption'
the idea of him "overcoming the odds" again is just ludicrous too
imo it was a decent enough promo but the problem is he is so stale and the fued is about nothing and further to that : nobody wants him to win so he's not going to get cheers for just 'i am going to rise above hate and overcome the odds and win' type stuff
He had good promos last year against Rock and against Punk. The problem is that he doesn't seem to try as hard if it's not a big match against a big name opponent. He either comes out a rambles about shit that doesn't make sense to try and be funny or whenever he gets serious he starts shouting into the microphone like an idiot.
As others have said, the rivalry is boring and John Cena is boring. Cena has been using the same character for the past 6 years (I'm an underdog somehow, even though I am the face of the company). A lot of his earlier work was entertaining at least. In my opinion Cena is a living example of one of the reasons why guys like CM Punk, The Undertaker, and The Great Muta are all great wrestlers, because they evolve their characters over time. I can't see anything different about John Cena now than I did back when I started getting bored with his character.
He's a really bad actor and it's starting to taint his mic skills.
I think the problem with The Rock and Cena is it's harder to get behind them without any good legitimate heels for them to feud with, especially when they're always working with each other or Punk. Honestly I don't think anything has changed about The Rock's charisma and mic skills it's just the state of the WWE and the storylines he's constantly booked in is different. They're always these heavy-hitter 'once in a lifetime' 'now vs. then' kinda feuds instead of the really fun ones he could have with The McMahons, Triple H and Jericho.
He has two styles , half time speech or poor comedy.
He tried doing his half time speech crap on Monday and rightly got booed for it. It was half assed and could have fit into any feud hes had in the past 10 years.
Ridiculous, of course he can cut decent promos. he can cut great promos given the right circumstance, just like any other good mic worker. Like someone else pointed out though, the times where he cuts cheesy and hard-to-sit-through promos are too many and they overshadow his good work.
I will probably get CM Punk marks hating on me for this but over the past few months IMO Punk can't cut a promo for shit. In 2011 I loved his promo's, he just sounds like he doesn't give a shit and his promo's recently are just flat out boring.
I think where his promos went down hill is when he was against Ryback and The Big Show but as soon as he is against The Rock, The Undertaker and John Cena he steps up his game and cuts great promos again.
I do think that he is coasting at the moment because he probably knows the direction he is going in and is holding out for then. I admit his promos against The Undertaker haven't been the best but its pretty difficult to when you cutting promos against a guy who has a supernatural gimmick in 2013. CM Punk has toned it down because he could and would rip The Undertaker apart in a promo and The Undertaker is notorious for not been able to cut a good promo.
All in all put him in the right feud or the right situation but feed him scraps against people who are inept (RYBACK) then he is going to have nothing to work with and verbally burry them. Im pretty sure Ryback Vs CM Punk never got too personal because it would have just buried him.
I think if you read all over this place that Punk doesn't give a shit anymore, then go into an episode of RAW with that mindset, that's how it's going to look. I've seen Punk's side in the Undertaker feud to be a little lacklustre compared to how I would expect it to be, but I know people who are much more casual fans who have seen the buildup and been psyched about it. I need to make a conscious effort to forget the cynical shit I read online, even if just for the duration of an episode, then form my own opinion of it. Anyway, regardless: 20-1, bitches!
