I permanently checked out on him early 2006 to 2007 Wrestlemania. He was making everybody tap to his horrible submission move. Angle, Benoit, Sabu. The booking that killed Cena for me was having him go over Triple H and Shawn Michaels in back to Back WM Main Events with his horrible STF to "get the move over."
I realize he's made everybody tap out to that but it is such a kayfabe breaker for me. It sucks me right out of any moment in any match Cena has ever had. It always looks bad. It always looks transitional. It never looks good. It is a shit move. I can't accept this guy making everybody in the company tap out to that twice when it looks like a rest hold and not even a good rest hold. STFU killed him for me.
Was never a Cena fan, I stopped watching wrestling around the time he debuted, after that I would watch the occasional RAW, and the first time I saw him with the lock chain and rapping it made me cringe, hate when rap is used as a gimmick. Once I started watching wrestling again more regularly he was already full Super Cena and getting booed.
Top 5 Current - Bray Wyatt, Ryback, Dean Ambrose, Sami Zayn, Bo Dallas
Top 5 All Time - Rey Mysterio, The Rock, DDP, Stone Cold, Chris Jericho
I suppose it's just personal preference. But I seemed to get the impression the hate was building up right until WM22 when he defeated HHH, after that I think there was no going back.
Interestingly enough WM22 was when I got back into wrestling, I hadn't watched it for a few years about early 2002. But when I watched it I didn't like Cena straight away, it had nothing to do with him being new and me just not liking him, there were plenty of new guys I hadn't seen before and thought they were great. I just couldn't get into him.
It's not ONE moment for me in particular. It's a succession of events that just sort of pile up. The hipocrisy of a face that bullies the heels. The underdog that's actually an overdog (if that isn't a real word it should be) and the commentators that keep trying to convince us otherwise. The constant crowd pandering. And last but not least, the submissionhold that only makes me beg for him to stop because it's so unbearably corny and ineffective.
R.I.P. The Shield (2012-2014)
Currentling ing for:
Seth Rollins, Romans Reigns, Dean Ambrose, The Wyatt Family, Antonio Cesaro, Fandango, Randy Orton, BNB, Stephanie McMahon, AJ Lee, Summer Rae, Paige, Lana, Enzo Amore, Big Cass, Carmella, Tyler Breeze, Sami Zayn and the backstage goddess, Renee Young (although technically she's not even a real journalism).
When he beat HBK at Wrestlemania was the straw that broke the camels back for me, I was majorly pulling for a HBK win, I wanted to see Shawn have one last run with the title, He deserved it, and Cena won and ruined my dreams lol, Hated him since, theres nothing enjoyable about watching him now, Mouldy Bread best describes him..
