Other than the fact that it's a ridiculous gimmick I can't see who the WWE is catering to. Perhaps the mothers of the children who are obviously there to see John Cena? Johnny Curtis has talent, and I guess they just want to see what he can do with this role. Honestly, I think he can pull it off, but can he ever recover from a gimmick like this? This is the main issue I have with this. How well will Johnny pull this off, and if he will ever be able to mature past this character? Val Venis got stuck with a horrible gimmick that he could never really break from. Venis was no legend, but he had potential, and it was wasted to a cheap Attitude Era, porn star gimmick.
Fandango certainly is not a porn star gimmick, but the sexual vibe is definitely there. I can't imagine people tuning in to watch this Fandango ever. I don't want to call this gimmick a failure because we haven't had it go on it's own yet. Curtis is talented, and I think will act this role accordingly. I just hope the WWE doesn't allow him to keep this act very long. Changing it to soon is never a strong idea, but gradually toning his character down sounds like a more logical move. Part of me just can't see this gimmick working with today's WWE crowd. It probably would, or could have had more success 15-20 years ago though. I guess we will just have to wait, and see.
