It would be amazing for the business if there was a marketable top face.
Problem is, there isn't. Even if Ryback/Del Rio get big, I doubt anyone will buy their t-shirts.

Re: Cena heel turn is finally coming
Yeah, had a long discussion about this last night on the Royal Rumble thread, and I'd bet anything on Cena being behind the Shield at this point.
The WWE are not stupid, they know that no one asked for a road to redemption fairy tale Cena win, so the only way I can see this match happening if to set up a huge shocker at the end where the Shield would interfere on Cena's behalf. The rematch surely won't draw as much as the novelty of the first match, so going that was makes sense, plus, they revigorate Cena and have an angle that could potentially get more eyeballs on their product which is only a good thing.
The current Cena incarnation worked for a while, but it's run it's course and has become painstakingly stale. Seing that the WWE seem to be moving into a more mature direction, using the ace up their sleeve of a Cena heel turn is perfect. It's not like he's getting any younger, if they're going to turn him, now's the perfect time. Have him screw the most beloved superstar perhaps of all time by "doing what it takes" in their rematch. Perfect long term booking.
Oh, notice how Cena was the only guy that didnt try to extract revenge on the Shield after his beatdown? Notice how the commentators barely mentioned it after the fact? I think that small beatdown was meant to deceive us.

As great as that would be, I don't think WWE has the balls. Don't forget that they're doing HHH/Lesner 2, and that's going to be a "road to redemption fairy tale HHH win". Also, the product would be similer, except Cena would be burying the faces instead of the heels. Remember the Cena/Zigglar series? Now just put Orton, Sheamus, or ADR in his shoes and you got the next victims of a heel John Cena.
They won't turn Cena heel because none of the other faces are big enough to replace him, or even compete with him as a heel. Cena's the only "big" current-gen Superstar nowadays.

I think the fact it's the shield who interfered will become significant.

Vince tells commentary exactly what to say and what not to say. Cole going crazy that it was the Shield must be leading to something and not just something with no meaning.

Well, what if they turn CM Punk back into a fan favorite? They could do (for example) the rumored Cm Punk/Taker match at Mania, and the angle could revolve around the Shield's interference in helping Punk win the match. That would not only give the match some much needed doubt, but it would distract people from what is really going on beneath the surface.
So you get to wrestlemania and have the Punk/Taker match, the Shield could come out, and Punk (being sick of people thinking they're linked) finally snaps and retaliates against them, costing him the Taker match, and turning him into a fan favorite again. The Shield could then go on and interfere later in the main event and give everyone the shocker they never saw coming. At that point, CM Punk could be their anti-hero as they continue grooming guys like Ziggler and Ryback into full fledged marketable stars. Just the fact that babyfaces would be involved in a program with a heel Cena could potentially raise their stock if done right.

10 years from now some of you guys will still think a Cena heel turn is on the horizon.

I read all of your posts in that thread and while the rumble sucked all the enthusiasm out of me, i read your posts with renewed hope. I'm really trying to give myself one last jolt of enthusiasm to get me to Mania in the hope that everything you have said does happen.
I feel like Austin when he was in the sharpshooter to Bret at WM 13 and he was begining to pass out before trying to find one last ounce of adrenalin when he tried desperately to break the hold with the blood streaming down his face as he screamed in agony before passing out. Well thats me atm, i'm hanging by a thread. After WM it will be quite simple for me i'll either feel like a little kid again or just about walk away from the product for good
