CM Punk's reign should be compared to Cena's 2006-2007 run. Its similar in length and just 5 years ago rather than 50 years.

I BARELY know who Bruno Sammartino is. Sammartino initially retired in 1981, 6 years before I was even born. Bruno Sammartino had his last "return from retirement" match when I was in the womb.

Nobody under 40 knows who the fuck Bruno Sammartino is. Period.

There is pre-Hogan and post-Hogan. Post-Hogan matters. Pre-Hogan is a trivia question.
That's ridiculous. All history should be accounted for, regardless of when you were born. After all it's people like Bruno who paved the way for guys like Hogan. What if in 10 years time or 20 years, people will be saying the same thing about Hogan. That everything post-Austin matters, and pre-Austin is just trivia, and nobody knows who the fuck is Hogan. We preserve history for this type of stuff.

Although I have actually been semi impressed with CM Punk's reign, Bruno Sammartino was the champion during a time when wrestling had a certain mystique surrounding it as well as the wrestlers.

I personally won't enjoy a reign that long though. It will be quite redundant.

how can you ignore history? thats like saying world history is irrelevant for Americans before the 1700's. Bruno helped establish Vince Sr's promotion, he was an icon, you can't just ignore all that shit.

Punk is just that, a Punk compared to somebody like Sammartino. The fact that we are even mentioning them in the same sentence is ludicrous.

No. Just no. Can anyone truly say that Punk's was more "impressive" when his run has been portrayed as a joke and despite him being champion for 300+ days, he still had to "prove himself"?
The fuck outta here and take the blinders off.

I don't know much about Bruno Sammartino but from everything I heard the dude was a legit bad ass (on the same level as Meng and Scott Norton) and that he could sell out shows. That being said, I'm a CM Punk, but until his heel turn, his title reign really wasn't memorable. Most of his feuds didn't have that oomph, first he fought Del Rio and the Miz, then he had the Jericho feud, which had a lame and forced build up. The promo's were intense from Jericho's end, the guy definitely drew heat, but it was pretty obvious Jericho was just coming in to lose to Punk to "build him up", even though he was already massively over with the crowd. It didn't help that Jericho didn't win any other matches during this time.

The Daniel Bryan stuff led to great matches too, but again, the dude was coming off a weak title reign where it appeared he was weaker that just about all of the other main event guys on Smackdown, despite having the title. Honestly, I'm not a big Ryback fan, but it seems like that was really the first interesting feud Punk has had with someone since winning the belt.

JBL's reign is probably better than both.

Why is CM Punk's reign being compared to Bruno Sammartino's by anybody, when he hasn't even come close to Bob Backlund's or Hulk Hogan's reigns yet?

Something I brought up a while back would have been to compare title defences. Punks made 18 televised title defences in his over 14 month reign. It's easy to imagine that there may have been an additional match he he not suffered the pre-TLC injury. That's a more impressive stat than Sammartino, but that's probably the only one.

When Sammartino was injured in the middle of his reign the WWWF nearly folded without him. He was a much bigger star then than Punk is now. I think that's undeniable.

It's really up in the air as to how you judge it though. With all the added responsibility and the increase in media duties that Punk has had, added to the approx 300 shows that he will have competed it. That's more impressive than Bruno.

I think more than anything, It's more impressive that WWE have had as much faith in Punk.
