Arrogant anti-hero. I think that's the major difference between Attitude Era faces and current faces like Cena/Sheamus/Del Rio/Miz, they're all humble and friendly with each other. I like Sheamus and Del Rio, but that's always going to hold them back.
The only anti-hero we have today is Orton, he actually has the firm belief that he's the most important human being in the room. That goes a long way towards telling the audience that he's worthy of your attention. Ziggler resolutely promises that he's the best, and that he's going to "steal the show," IE put on the best performance that night, which is actually what he says in real life. John Cena's "Isn't the WWE awesome!? Today's stars can face yesterday's stars, we have so much fun for you tonight..." has its value, but it lacks the arrogance
and therefore credibility that Austin and Rock had. Saying "I believe I'm the best, and every superstar should", which Cena says, doesn't make the speaker special. Saying "I am the best, period, you suck" will convince the audience you might actually be special.
Its actually a lot like politicians running for office: they just can't complement each other, they have to shit on each other constantly. Same with anti-hero faces. I like Sheamus and Del Rio for being buddy-buddy, but they could go so much farther if they look at each other and said "fuck you, you don't belong in the same ring with me." Wrestling is supposed to be outlandish. Simple respect between competitors isn't entertaining at all. I would say the same for Cena, except Cena is soooo popular for doing it the way he's doing it that he should just keep at it, his fans might abandon him if he changed.
Austin and Rock never shook hands. They were EGOMANIACS, better than everyone else in every way. They might congratulate the night after a loss, but that was just to explain what happened at a PPV. Outside of those rare moments, arrogance is the only way to really gain respect. Hell, that's why I loved Del Rio as a heel! Bring back the cars damn it! You're important, act important!
