What will finally rattle John Cena?
First off, this is not about turning heel. Get over it.
I'm simply wondering what will make John Cena the character become frustrated for more than a single day. No matter what's happened to him over the years, he just presses forward without acting as though any misfortune could derail him.
Lose to The Rock? Whatever, here comes Brock Lesnar.
Lose to Punk 5 or 6 times? Whatever, I'm the man.
Cash in MITB and fail? Whatever, I'm the man.
Lose to Johnny Ace? Whatever, I'm the man.
Lose the match for the briefcase to Dolph Ziggler? Whatever, I'm the man.
2012 was the worst year for John Cena (the character) since he ascended to the main event in 2005, and yet he's every bit the smiling, happy-go-lucky buffoon he was the year before. So what, if anything, will rattle his cage from a character standpoint? What event would actually cause him to gain just a bit of an edge, if not a full-on turn?

Kayfabe you say? I was gonna say an empty arena...
He has lost 2 years at Mania, in a row, so maybe a third...TO THE SAME MAN.

Limited to no reaction.
As long as he gets boos he's fine. Doesn't matter. When you come out like Brian Christopher and it sounds like a funeral...that's when you know you're in trouble.
But that will never happen to Cena...so it's really a moot point.

When a babyface becomes unquestioningly a bigger star than him.

I do have one question for anyone who might feel that Dwayne Johnson "owes" the business. Is it just him, or is it anyone who moved on to other things? Should Luna Vachon get heat for running a towing company instead of working on RAW? Should Maven be critiqued on his Home Shopping Network bits instead of wrestling?
Or is it only the ones who go on to highly visible careers in movies that owe something? Why do Johnson (who left after putting people over, doing the traditionally "right thing") and Lesnar (who did not; except for making Eddie a legitimate star) get called sell-outs who "forgot where they came from" when someone who retires to do some regular job get credit (as they should) for moving on and making it without falling into a sea of addiction?

Re: What will finally rattle John Cena?
I don't know if anything can shake Cena at this point. It looked like he might actually change around the time of Kane/Rock/Brock, but he's clearly very content playing this corny, happy-go-lucky character.
What worries me is that as awful as it was to watch his character in 2012, he'll be the exact same person in 2013. Only this year he'll win a whole hell of a lot more, which will give him even more reason to smile and joke around.

Re: What will finally rattle John Cena?
I've always had this vision of the kids booing him and Cena finally snapping.
