Alberto Del Rio defeated a former world champion in his debut match.
That's irrelevant. The point was that beating former world champions early in your career doesn't necessarily lead to success (see Lashley, Kennedy, etc.). For all of his faults, Del Rio is already a success in WWE (2 WWE Championships, Royal Rumble, MITB, 1 WrestleMania world title match, etc.).

To stay on topic, Kofi Kingston also defeated former world champion Chris Jericho for his first IC title
Just one more example that beating a world champion doesn't mean a guaranteed world championship

Would you really say he is? He's been given a lot, but he doesn't garner any reaction. Ricardo gets more heat than him. He's only around the main event scene because the WWE randomly keeps him up there. He might have a job still, sure, but for right now I can say he's more in the pile with Swagger where he's been to the top and yet he's generally irrelevant. Feels like all of his accomplishments in 2011 never happened.
Don't see how Swagger can be grouped into the unsuccessful pile and ADR can't. Same thing for both guys. Only difference is the WWE continues to force feed Del Rio. They just stopped with Swagger.
I'm not comparing the two, either. It's just what was being claimed fits Del Rio too. Because unless he does manage to become a champ again and show that he's really a successful guy with the company, he's nothing.

Yeah cuz us black folk can't get a job without it, right? No way Kofi could get a job in WWE off of talent alone. He can't compete with all that great white talent in WWE!
If this is a joke, its not funny. If you're serious, you're a racist idiot. Don't have children. The world has enough people like you in it. We don't need more.

Del Rio is far more successful than Swagger in terms of kayfabe accomplishments.
Swagger cashed in MITB on Smackdown and won a glorified midcard title, then lost it quickly, never had a world title match on PPV again, and got demoted to jobber status.
Del Rio cashed in MITB at SummerSlam and won the WWE Championship, the only title that really matters. He's a 2-time WWE Champion, plus he won the largest Royal Rumble ever and continues to get world title matches on PPV. Sure, if we're judging success as "overness", then Del Rio's still not a success. Not at all. But his kayfabe resume is very strong, especially when you remember that he's only been around 2 years.
