But where will the city get the money? They are in the hole. Supporting the stadium is good, but if in bankruptcy the city has to tell them they will get tax breaks but there is no cash to give. All cities should do that if they are broke.

We were told the Jags coming to Jacksonville would create jobs. If it did it was only in concessions at the stadium. We have not benefitted at all by giving the Jags our tax money. It should be used on meaningful things for the city. Let the rich Jags owner pay his own money for what he wants.

If the Red Wings make so much money, then why is Detroit broke? As if this arena is enough to even make a dent in the eternal debt this city has put itself in.

It's no surprise that a shortened hockey season brings about bankruptcy lolololol

Can't rely on a hockey team alone to make the city all the money they need. If the Red Wings didn't exist (I suppose we can throw in the Lions and Tigers as well), the city probably would have been bankrupt sooner.

Lol what a joke. Detroit is a shithole. How about instead of spending $400M on a new arena, they invest that money into you know... try and get their city out of shithole status. A new arena is a long term investment and it won't be even be built for another 5 years so if they're banking on a new arena to fix all their woes.... the city is more stupid than I thought

Why not just make The Palace at Auburn Hills a duel use arena and have it be home to both the Pistons and Red Wings. or would that be counter intuative since i think that stadium is a bit outside the city.

Anyway I can see why they would okay the stadium, Red Wings are a huge part of Detroit and most likely bring in a lot of money to the surrounding businesses.

It is a good idea. Of course it would be nice to see $444 million go straight to the education/police/firefighters etc but assuming they follow in the footsteps of Arsenal FC from the English Premier League then it can benefit the people and surrounding areas.

http://www.arsenal.com/the-club/comm...d-regeneration

Quote:
Included within the £390 million redevelopment programme was major inward investment into an area which suffered from serious deprivation and had seen little investment in recent years.

The regeneration of over 60 acres of land within the Borough is still taking place and has been the medium for significant urban regeneration in and around Islington.

Arsenal in the Community’s programme intensified on moving to the new stadium with an investment of over £1.8million from the Highbury section 106. The department’s consistent engagement with young people via its social inclusion projects have also been the catalyst for the regeneration of pitches around the Borough.
Quote:
Affordable housing formed a huge part of the regeneration programme and 2,500 new and refurbished homes, of which 40 per cent are classified as affordable housing, as well as substantial key worker housing was also created.
Quote:
As one of the largest regeneration schemes in Europe, the Emirates Stadium project provided enormous benefits to the local community which included the creation of over 2,600 new jobs through the development, which included more than 1,800 long-term positions.
Quote:
Additional benefits included significant investment in local businesses, new areas of public space, making the streets safer for local residents and pedestrians, investment into the transport network and pathways to employment through construction. Funds were also made available to local communities through schemes such as the Gunners Community Fund, which assisted small schemes such as local nurseries and neighborhood watch schemes and the Arsenal FC Community Benefit Fund which has awarded over £500,000 to local community groups for projects and activities which address the needs of disadvantaged communities within Holloway and Highbury.
Quote:
The Arsenal Learning Centre was also been built for the local community in the Northern Triangle Building on Emirates Stadium podium, offering a vast range of different courses for all ages.
Just to name a few benefits that the new stadium in North London has brought to the area.

Sports is vital to any city. Without the work Liverpool and Everton do in the community for the city of Liverpool, there would be a lot more kids on the streets getting into trouble, where as schemes just as Everton In The Community allows us to give the poorer kids a chance to learn and meet up weekly for a game of football and train with some coaches.

The Palace is way the hell away from the downtown core, so you're on-point with your question about it being counter-intuitive. I wouldn't be opposed to the Pistons / Wings sharing a new arena in downtown Detroit, but that would require agreement between the two different owners.

Being from Windsor, and having attended countless hockey games, numerous concerts and wrestling events at the Joe, I'll be happy when they leave that shithole. Yes, it HAS history. But the amenities are just second-rate all around.

Plus, I just hate those fucking curtains. No more curtains please.

If I was owner of the Red Wings I would get the hell out of Detroit and relocate to a much nicer city.
