I am not a homosexual male, myself, but I am very active in the LGBT and Out communities. I never felt like there was much need for an openly gay wrestler, after all, what difference would it make if a wrestler was gay or not?
Regardless, I was pleasantly surprised to hear the WWE was not only booking an openly gay wrestler, but an openly gay black wrestler. I felt the character would be a positive role model for gay youths and maybe help break down some of the social taboos.
However, I soon found out what a fool I was for expecting the WWE to show any class or taste! As soon as he comes down the ramp, he's putting on a flamboyant minstrel show. Shouting catch phrase and spewing "don't go there girlfriend"-esque passive aggressive comments the likes of which even the contestnts on RuPaul's Drag Race would scoff at.
I watched in horror as every gay stereotype manifested itself. Constant, flirtatious innuendos about other wrestlers genitals flooded his promos, ceasing only for prissy vanities about appearance, weight, and clothing to flow from his mouth, further driving home the notion that gay men are all campy, self-conscious, "beef cake" loving perverts.
Things got worse when he got out his guitar. I was hoping for a brief moment that they would present him as a sensitive artist, and would show off the talent in the LGBT community. I was again proved wrong as a vaudeville-esque barrage of sexual innuendo and camp was pounded into my tympanic cavities.
Look, I have nothing wrong with campyness and some good natured ribbing, but I feel the WWE has turned Dwayne the Rock Johnston's lifestyle and personal sexual preference into a nasty, crude, bolt of negative stereotypes being drilled into our brains. I hope that in the coming weeks, the WWE will take on a more enlightened, intelligent approach to this character, and I hope that this character's portrayal of same-sex romance hasn't soured your personal views about homosexuals and homosexuality.
How would you feel if your young son seen a Orlando Jordan type character? Would it it be perfectly acceptable for him to copy Orlando Jordan?
