Even Rosarito isn't all that bad. Hell, even Tecate has some cute parks and such. But the danger of getting robbed or killed just on the two-hour drive from the border to Rosarito is so high now it's not worth it. Back in the day it used to be reasonably safe, usually the policia would scam you out of a hundred bucks or so but whatever, alcohol down there was so cheap it evened out if you stayed the weekend. But after 9/11 tourists stopped going so they stopped bothering to even pretend to contain the cartels, because the tourist money stopped flowing, and now it's too dangerous. Inevitably idiots try. Spring breakers go all the time, and idiot college students, and stupid tourists, but for the most part the only time locals get abducted now is from this side of the border and that only happens if you have enough money to be worth all that effort for.
