Sure it might only stop a fraction of the shootings. But if it saves a few lives per year its worth it. And maybe more steps can be taken eventually.
You have to start somewhere.

I also don't consider the fact that the government will turn on me like '1984'. I'm considering the fact that an assault rifle is too powerful for a semi-trained civilian to be holding. I don't see a defense to have automatic assault rifles in 'defense against a tyrannical state'.

Farmers need a gun to protect their animals but the general public? i don't agree.

Stabbing deaths in the uk are at the highest point in history. Stabbing injuries are astronomical. That's coming from your own government's numbers.

The mentally ill shouldn't be allowed to have guns, Who decides who is mentally ill and who is sane? People put far to much faith in the gubment to "take care of them" they're people who fuck up on average about twice as much as people who aren't part of them.

You should very much consider 1984... Orwell wasn't talking out of his ass when he wrote it. You say you were military, you should remember back to the oath you took about protecting the people from enemies both foreign and domestic. The people that came up with the oaths you guys take also were not talking out of their ass. They lived through a government turning on them, they knew how possible it was. Things really haven't changed all that much since where what we're talking about is concerned.

You don't have to qualify with any weapon you purchase through an FFL, and the most you will have to wait is 3 days max for the NICS check. And yes, there were people defending their property with semi-automatic rifles. I saw it myself during Katrina. And you can't just buy an automatic rifle. As to the defense of property outside of Katrina? The LA Riots in 1992, where armed store owners stood atop their businesses with weapons in plain sight to deter...looters...for a lack of better word.

Do you notice the complete lack of criminal activity around that store?

You put way too much stock in your military training. There are people out there who didn't serve a day in the military that know more than anyone in the military tenfold. An AR15 is a rifle that holds a lot of ammo. That's where the "power" is, in it's ammo capacity. Surely it's not in it's 62 grain cartridge.

I'm not for a ban at all, but can understand having more provisions when it comes to the mentally disturbed. Since it seems to me like the people doing these terrible crimes seem to be nuts.

There have been countless incidents where civilians who were carrying a handgun on them prevented severe losses of life if any loss at all.

There's a reason 8 percent of home burglaries happen while owner's are gone in The US, while like half take place when residents are home in The UK.

Criminals are afraid of getting shot, not getting hit with a bat.

who decides? People with educations and degrees an trained in doing so.

the oath of the military states what you said, protecting people. so I don't worry about the government turning on me one bit because they took an oath to protect me. I think we're delving into too much conspiracy theory here. There are plenty of other ways to defend yourself besides holding an automatic rifle.

and lol @Glass Shatters; I do hold the military too high. Some of them national guardsmen shouldn't be allowed to hold a weapon. and considering many instructors are just contractors. such dirtbags.

Funny that you have a lot of trust in the government, I have a friend who is a marine, and from what I've heard, it seems like most of them have little trust in the government.

I don't see how you can trust them when they've tested shit on you that they knew could potentially cause cancer later in your life.
