The guy at Virginia Tech killed 32 people and injured 17 more. He was armed only with two handguns. The type of gun doesn't actually matter. A bullet to the head kills anyone dead in most cases.
The shooting at the University of Texas in the 60s was done without an assault rifle. Armed to the teeth (rifles, shotgun, handguns), he killed more than 10 people (16 and injured dozens).
The massacre at a Luby's restaurant in Killeen, TX, the guy used two handguns as well. He killed over 20 people.

They were semi-automatic pistols which are different from regular handguns. Plus he barricaded the doors so that no one could escape.
