Re: Obama plan: Ban assault weapons
My issue here is it seems like conservatives don't want to do anything to try to reduce these massacres. It seems like they are under the impression "well, we're never going to stop them"... true, but I still think we can do things to reduce this type of stuff, but they don't want to budge on anything, even if it means lives could be saved.
I think people should be allowed to own guns, but the guns that they use in these massacres, that can fire off dozens of rounds in seconds, there is no practical use for civilians being able to own these things in the first place. The NRA will respond by saying "well why persecute the innocent?", my feeling is that there are plenty of times that you can do something and get fined or put in jail, even if you technically didn't hurt anybody. Things like going past the speed limit, yes, you may have not injured anybody, but it was still irresponsible.
Personally I think psychological evaluations are necessary, limit the number of bullets that can be purchased, and make people register their guns. This type of stuff could take decades to fully implement, but I'd feel much safer knowing a nut case has a very bad chance at getting a gun legally. The NRA's response seems to be militarizing our schools by giving teachers guns and having armed security guards at every school, which is a lot less feasible.
