only difference is, christianity offered an afterlife concept where everyone doesnt go go hell except for war heroes, instead offering an afterlife based on actions

so yeah, at the time christianity was considered a step up

I used to be a Christian (like everyone in my family I think), but I opened my eyes. Religion is brainwashing to me...God, heaven, hell all this pathetic crap is just a lie created to scare fools into being ''good'' and doing ''good'' things. The only god I know is me. I won't try to be a different person just because of a stupid myth. If I'm wrong, then I guess hell is where I'm going. I really don't give a shit, not anymore.
I won't believe in god until I see him. Listen ''god'', Dec 21st 2012 is your last chance. I'm challenging you to a ladder match. To win, you have to climb the ladder and reach heaven. The winner becomes god, the king of the whole universe. The loser ceases to exist. Your title of god is in trouble. Some people preach religion as an incentive to lead a better life. And I get that. But.

Wouldn't people be more grateful and careful with their lives if they were greeted with the fact that this is all we have? There is nothing from this point on. The average person in a modern country gets roughly 70 years of living and then you're gone. Never alive again. Ever.

I think that would scare more people than the concept of being anywhere after this. Dying into a black abyss where that is the end of your existence is scarier than any concept of hell to me.
