The Pub. Dying a Slow Death
Many of us young people won't remember but about 30 years ago, Liverpool used to be absolutely bouncing on Thursday nights. Fridays were a blast and the weekend was incredible. Every pub in Liverpool had a welcome. There were some dodgy ones. There were some real shithole pubs. But they all had character and characters.
In many cases around the country they were the centre of the community. Some were dirty, smelly, smoky and rough. But they were ours and part of the countries legacy.
Every road you'd go down there would be people out and about and having a great time.
And it's nearly gone. Nowadays when you go past most pubs not on a Friday/Saturday - they are pale remnants. Most of the best ones are living on the edge. Many are forced to close by local councils seeking the land to sell on. The price of ale goes up and the pubs struggle to survive.
Is it a good thing? Is it good for people's health? Given the state of the country and the state of pensions then who really wants to be living into their 90s or even late 80s? Every man and woman have their time and living longer just brings problems for everyone.
What's wrong with living fast and dying if not young then at a respectable age? What's wrong with history, tradition, culture and history? What's wrong with our pubs and why are subsequent Governments - Labour and Tory - so desperate to shut them down, fuck communities up and tell US what WE can DO. Fuckers. What's it got to fucking do with them what I or anyone else does?
I even saw some Tory bitch the other day having a go at pensioners for drinking. I mean. What the fuck. They've worked all their life and they finally retire and want to relax and enjoy their lives and they have some wet tart from down south telling them to fuck off and sit in their homes rotting, having no fun and doing nothing til they die. Bitch.
Andy3000, your thoughts?

Re: The Pub. Dying a Slow Death
Friday night used to be Fight Night.
The supermarkets' booze prices squeeze the pubs. They try to blame most of it on the smoking ban but that's balls.
The government is out to screw everybody.

Dance clubs are my forte. I haven't ventured into a pub, mainly because I can't drink legally.

Are there still some states in the US where you can't legally drink in bars until you're 24? I remember my sister telling me that when she went there many years ago, late 90s I think.
I know it's 21 for a lot of places, but 24 is just fucking stupid. In the UK it's 18, though we start chugging on 3 litre bottles of cider when we're 15. Or probably 6 in Andy's case.
I remember my first forays into pubs when I was 16. We'd send the oldest looking of us to go buy all the drinks. Fun times.

Not at all. The legal age for all states is 21. It used to be 18 in most states up until the 1980s.

I started drinking later then most Brits at 17. Used to go the pub like 3 times a week when I first started university. Much prefer pubs to nightclubs though it might be my taste in music as I hate most of the songs played their

Re: The Pub. Dying a Slow Death
Pubs aren't dying because people aren't drinking, the problem is supermarkets undercutting them.
Wouldn't say they are dying though, they just don't have the massive demand they once did. There will always be pubs, just not as many as in the 80s.
Personally I love beer, and it tastes so much better in draft than canned or bottled. So pubs are always going to have a purpose for me.

Good. I hope all bars/pubs/clubs cease to exist as soon as possible.

The pub trade will never totally die out because there will always be a demand for them, allbeit from a much smaller number of people.
Supermarkets have ruined the pub industry without a doubt, why go to the pub and pay £3 a pint when you can go up to tescos and get 4 cans for a fiver. Its simply maths and especially given the current squeeze on personal finance people will always choose tesco over their local.
I personally love pubs and a lot of the best nights out ive had have been sat in the pub with the lads putting the world to right over a fair few pints. Its the first place we would all go to meet up when we came back from uni.
The problem for pubs is i dont think their is a fix. People have become acustomed to drinking at home and with more pubs closing meaning more travel time for people i dont see the trend stopping which is a massive shame
