Not sure how it is elsewhere but in Australia we use poof a lot but its more of an affectionate put down. If you were to say 'yeah but he's a bit of a poof' it generally means, he's okay just a bit gay. If you were to say 'yeah but he's a bit of a faggot' its more of a putdown.
