Re: Why I hate mainstream music?
I just hate when a underground artist makes one Mainstream song and their fans wanna turn their back on them(Kendrick Lamar). Well actually Kendrick is mainstream kinda now. Nas is mainstream too, but is one of the greatest rappers in history. Mainstream isn't a bad thing really.

Re: Why I hate mainstream music?
Reminds me of 50 Cent, had one of the biggest buzzes I ever seen before signing a deal (actually it was his second deal) and basically ruined Ja Rule's career.
But, when he began making more "mainstream" music, it's like people turned on him, calling him a "sell out". At the end of the day, the whole purpose is to make money, not only for you, but more importantly the label. They're not going to sign you, under the expectation that you're still going to cater you your underground fanbase, while somewhat ignoring the pop crowd.
Don't get me wrong, I hate what some of my favorite artists have become but beneath all the mainstream shit, they still have some gems laying around. You just have to explore and maintain an open mind, give everything a try.

I don't think the purpose should be "to make money" as an artist, just like any art, the true purpose should be to "express yourself" like an artist does with a painting or a poet his poetry. Making money should just be a bonus. I think a lot of artists are like that in the beginning, but then they see dollar signs and get greedy, hence the term "selling out" That's why I look beyond the mainstream not because I'm a hipster phaggot, but because the motivation behind the artists to make music is wrong and it is illustrated in their music.

Re: Why I hate mainstream music?
To OP: I agree with everything you have said. For the past 10 years mainstream music has gotten progressively worse and worse. Major record companies these days don't give a fuck about artistic vision or credibility and have found a way to shell out music to make the most profit available with the least amount of effort possible. Hence why I never get my music from the mainstream these days. All of your points are completely valid particularly the one's on today's mainstream hip hop. But I urge you not to give up on music entirely.
There is great music to be found everywhere outside the mainstream, even in hip hop there are absolute gems from the past 10 years. It is just knowing where to look. I'd suggest trying out last.fm, rateyourmusic.com and sputnikmusic.com to look for some of the highest rated music from the past 10 years from genres you enjoy and I guarantee you will find at least SOMETHING from each of them which you end up enjoying and potentially falling in love with. It does seem like a bind and in reality we shouldn't be having to do it but unfortunately that is how it is right now. But I guarantee that if you know where to look and those are only 3 examples of sites which are great sources for finding great music from the 21st Century you will realise that music can still be as creative as ever. It's just unfortunate they aren't promoted enough and general population doesn't know or doesn't seem to care.

Re: Why I hate mainstream music?
How are you going to put "I'm on a Boat" in your OP? It's meant to be funny and not to be taken seriously, all of The Lonely Island videos are like that.
What's mainstream anyways? I just saw Mumford and Sons on SNL and Muse is playing on there in two weeks. Those are two great bands that are popular in the mainstream. I'll agree that the majority of popular music is crap these days, but there are some great artists that are getting a lot of mainstream attention. Discovering music on the indie scene doesn't have to be your only option.

Re: Why I hate mainstream music?
Agreed,
Crazy thinking that bands like the SP used to chart pretty highly.
oh & Muse & Mumford and Sons aren't great at all.

I didn't mean to post that video as I was trying to put a different one instead. I might edit the op and put the video I intended to put there.
