Gay Veteran talks to Mitt Romney

Being a military veteran myself (US) and having worked alongside gay men and women, I 100% agree with the veteran. and as much as I hate to just 'stir the hate pot', I really wanted to share this with some people.

Military are stereotypically known for being Republican; but now that more than 50% of the military is African American, and the 'don't ask don't tell' has been repealed (meaning you can be in the armed forces and be gay and not get in trouble), I can't see Mitt Romney getting a huge military vote.

For those who don't know, a military marriage (man/woman), the wife will get benefits if the man dies. The children can use the GI Bill (paying for college and housing) as can the wife. Also, they'll get life insurance if the husband dies. To top it off, if a husband is stationed abroad, the wife and kids (depending where) are allowed to be brought over and the fmaily is given an extra compensation (more money than a single military man) to compensate.

Since a gay marriage is not recognized by the military, none of that is applicable to two men or wommen married. As well; if a military man is in the hosital, the gay husband won't be allowed to visit him since he is not a family memeber, no do they honor him as a significant other.

Be respectful of other people's opinions, this is not in Rants.

completely right. the fact that in 2012 gay marriage is even an issue worth discussing is ludicrous.

'A man and a woman and a man and a man should be treated equal.'

2012, I agree. Romney probably doesn't care, but he has/had to waive the Conservative Banner to have gotten the Republican Nomination.

Like everyone else said, it makes no sense that gay rights are still an issue in this age. But it is not surprising that is. Conservatives are always going to have a problem with it.

I have a soft spot for the man and I don't know why (I think he's kinda hot, but still).

I can at least respect the fact that he is by far one of the more rational Republican politicians in respects to LGBT rights, though I do believe his positions are strange. He supports anti-discriminatory legislation for the LGBT community and adoption rights for same-sex couples. He is even in favor of extending some marriage benefits to domestic partnerships, but is a proponent for the traditional heterosexual marriage and opposes same-sex marriage and civil unions. At one point, he supported the now repealed "don't ask, don't tell" policy. This honestly doesn't seem consistent with his self-proclaimed "pro-gay" stance (he emphasized that he supported gay rights in an interview with Piers Morgan), though I do agree with NearStark in that Romney is merely prescribing to the agenda of the Republican Party.

With that being said, this won't make me want to vote for him. I do also wonder why LGBT rights is such a polarizing issue in this country at this day and age.

Wow, just another example of Romney's view and how discriminatory he can be. The veteran is completely right. There shouldn't be a difference between his right's or his husband's right as opposed to he would be married to a woman. Like others said, it's 2012. USA and the world really needs to keep Obama. Here in Western Europe, gay marriage is accepted a long time ago.

Mentioning Western Europe or any other part of the world doing these things just pushes Conservatives further away from the notion. It's the same reason elected officials don't bring up other country's ability to pass such legislation, it's a guaranteed method to completely piss off a surprisingly large section of legislators AND voters.

I'm a veteran, too. I completely disagree with the repeal of the "Don't Ask Don't Tell" rule and believe that marriage is solely between a man and a woman. I'm not religious either, so don't get me started on that Bible thumping bullshit. I'm not old school in the least. The simple fact of the matter is that many straight people in COMBAT ARMS not some supply, transportation or orderly room bullshit do not want homosexual males around them during downtime and on deployments. It's fucking uncomfortable, period.
