Re: why do people waste their time with religion?
I'm heavily agnostic. I defy the bible entirely, and hold no stock in anything it says as far as it being proof of anything.
However, I am not an atheist either. To say religion is definitely not true - how the heck do you know?
Now, the evidence for a higher being is primarily faith based. I have no problem with that. In fact, those who adhere to the rules of religion and try to lead noble lives - good for you. Religion at its best is a good thing as far as the behavior in people it can cause. The people who take things too far with religion and do things "in the name of god" are who are not doing religion any favors. My personal gripe with religion, is that some of these religious people are evolution deniers, and that is where I draw the line. Evolution has mounds of evidence that would imply that a large portion of it is scientifically fact. Yes the evolutionary process has some gaps, but overall it's a pretty solid case that evolution is real.
Religion, done properly, should make people want to be nice to one another. God is basically to adults what Santa Claus is to children. Kids get older and realize there is no Santa when they see how illogical it is for one guy to get down a chimney to every house on Earth in 1 night. Adults get even older and still think one guy follows the thoughts and actions of every single person on Earth, has favorites, and helps teams wins sports.
If I was god, or a god of a planet, I wouldn't have any preference over anyone. Look at a batch of Sea Monkeys, a fish tank with all goldfish, or say an Ant Farm - does anyone here study the farm, the bowl, the tank and go "You know, that one right there, he's definitely my favorite.
Illogical. Foolish. I could give a shit if an ant gives me tribute. Go eat some food, I have better shit to do. If god wanted us to worship him (IF, there is a god, mind you) then he should come down here and tell me so. If I was designed by him, then how the hell can he blame me or think ill of me for using my "god given brains" to look around and come to the logical conclusion "You know, the evidence for one guy making this entire planet with all the geographical, archeological and biological data we have, is pretty far fucking fetched".
I don't see how a god could care or be happy/mad. A guy who could create or destroy all of this - he gives a shit what *I'm* doing? Yeah....ok.
