Heeeeeey! I bet I could find your country, and I'm down 60 lbs. since March 1... but I moved to TX (didn't need to, but I wanted a challenge), I'm not from here originally.

Agreed.

This actually reminds me of an experience I had in high school. We were tasked with writing an essay on a foreign country we would like to visit and why, citing historical, cultural and personal reasons. We had to read the essays aloud the day they were due. The majority of people wrote about various western European countries and a couple tropical countries. Next up is the class airhead, bleached blonde hair and all. She starts out: "The foreign country I most want to visit is Hawaii." I am astonished, as is most of the class and the teacher. I wouldn't be surprised if she held some sort of political office now.

The American car culture has made us extremely lazy when it comes to walking. I regularly walk to the store that is about 1/3 mile away. People think I'm crazy for doing so, and its not even that far away.
Yeah, i can't generalise every american and i'm not the fittest bloke in the world but i was amazed at the reaction to the notion that i was walking a little distance to the next terminal instead of waiting for a bus.

You two would make such a cute couple. =)
Of course as a German I condemn your passionate debate, since we Germans do not pursue any emotions except for bloodlust.

However... As much as I enjoy bashing on the self-rightheous US culture, which is currently losing its remaining cultural authenticity and fades into decadence, - I find it too easy to also blame you for stupidity. People are stupid EVERYWHERE in the world. Some know more about geography than rather self-centered US citizens, but the same people are usually as ignorant in other aspects.

The only thing I find sad is, that Americans are actively ruining and corrupting their formerly talented society and justify this decadence with "patriotism". The rest is just "the people" being lazy idiots in general on a global scale. =)

Actually, Austria exists merely to protect some particularly enthusiastic German Nazis from sharing responsibility for the 2nd World War. This, and Mozart Kugeln.

Forget Iraq, I saw one report (not sure on reliability, to be truthful) that stated 50% of the high school graduates (or higher) between 18-24 years old couldn't find New York or Ohio. Think about that.

New York. Where 9/11 happened. The state that has the largest city in the country. Where one of the most significant financial centers of the entire world is located. The Statue of Liberty. Ellis Island. Empire State Building. How does a significant portion of the country, with those statistics, NOT know where New York is located?

I saw another saying that people couldn't find Louisiana. . . this was right after Hurricane Katrina, when you could see where the storm made landfall!

This really doesn't surprise me. My ex attempted to start a shouting argument with me because she vehemently believed California was closer to Pennsylvania, than Louisiana is to Missouri. Its safe to say we didn't last much longer after that.

The "No Child Left Behind" ideology has crippled the U.S. education system. Instead of high standards where not everyone is guaranteed to pass, we have lowered the standards so much that anyone can pass. It looks good on a statistics layout, where we have a 95% graduation rate, but not so good when the movie "Idiocracy" becomes reality.

Re: Democrats

As I said, the US wants stupider voters who will follow any commercial propaganda they see, not people who can think for themselves. There's a reason jobs get outsourced, not only are the wages cheaper, the education is often better.
