I believe it should be a two-way process. Migrants should not be required to "assimilate", as that means them relinquishing all facets of their identity before they arrive in their destination country. They should be allowed to "integrate", which entails them keeping their original identities, yet also adapting to their new cultural context. This also requires the destination country to assist the migrants into settling into the country. Common opinions are that migrants should assimilate because members of the destination country do not want the onus of responsibility placed upon them to assist migrants. There is also the perception of cultural superiority among members of destination countries over migrants.
