DID YOU FORGET?

Fuck no, I didn't forget. 9/11 was one of the worst days in American history and I don't think anyone, especially living in this country, is going to forget that. Before I go any further, it affected me just as much as it affected anyone else who didn't know anyone involved. It was a horrible, horrible day, and I just remember being thankful that no one I knew died that day.

What ticks me off is the people every year that give half a shit until some big landmark day like this comes up, and suddenly it's "Did you forget? Did you?" as though they're trying to convict people. These people try to give off this message of unity and banding together and being compassionate, and at the same time, it's days like these (we'll call them "wreck days") when so many Americans become these radical, antagonist, arrogant fools who accurately project the image of why so many countries around the world hate us.

Normal day: "We should love each other! America is always there to help."
Wreck days: "I'm glad Saddam and Osama are dead! America, fuck yeah! DID YOU FORGET?"

And just what if someone did forget? It's a day on the goddamn calendar. What are you honestly going to do if someone says "Oh... yeah, what do you know, it's September 11th"? Are you going to stand there and give them a tirade and try to make them feel like a bad person for "forgetting"? I understand, there's a lot of pain, sadness, anger around the events of 10 years ago. But directing that at the people around you, going around and being this antagonist "Did you forget?" kind of person, news flash, goes directly against this "banding together as a nation" bullshit that you're trying to preach at the same time.

And there's absolutely no room for jokes, either. No one can make the slightest quip because apparently on this day, that would be un-American. They call September 11th the day that changed us forever. Every year since then, it seems to be the day America loses its sense of humor. I've even been on Facebook and seen statuses joking about something completely unrelated to September 11th condemned because it's September 11th. Really. The Yahoo! news that I go on every day to find funny articles and odd stories? Not today, because it's September 11th.

I'm sorry if it sounds offensive, but I know I don't look at September 11th on my calendar and come up to it with some big plan unless there's something I'm supposed to do that day. If I'm someone who knew one of the 2,976 (yes, we must also be specific or else), then obviously I'll approach this day a little differently. But if I'm not directly affected, can I not just wake up, go to church, watch some soccer, and have a normal day while keeping the events in mind? Fact is, tomorrow, I'm going to wake up and it's going to be September 12th. And yesterday? I know this is mind-boggling, but it was September 10th. And to be honest, that was a much more important day because I had a lot to do. Left the house at 7:30 AM and got back at 2:00 AM.

It's blunt, it probably seems harsh to anyone who's reading this and is one of those "Did you forget?" people, but it's funny to me how all these people in the self-proclaimed most compassionate country in the world lose just about all of their compassion on a day when it's needed the most.

Rant over. And for that sig I saw in the football threads that has England 5-1 Germany and says "10 YEARS. WE WILL NEVER FORGET": Thank you. I'm glad someone's got a sense of humor. Such a concept won't be re-appearing in America until, I dunno, September 12th maybe.

I have facebook. How the fuck could I forget?

Seriously though, my dad said it was like this for a long time after Pearl Harbor. Eventually it'll just be '9/11' like Pearl Harbor is Pearl Harbor Day.

I absolutely agree. All that human interest crap around 9/11 makes me sick. Yes it was a sad day, but how about you tell some dude in the DRC or Somalia that 3000 people dying in America is the end of the world.

Every fucking channel is running shit on it, how can you not forget? I couldn't give a shit now. Just like I couldn't give a shit within 5 minutes then. You don't have to show your patriotism to be patriotic, it's about if you would give your life for your country, not remembering this shit and waving flags and shit.

Even the fucking football preview shows are talking about 9/11. If I want to see 9/11 stuff, I'll turn to a news network. But I want to hear about football, so how about we talk about the New York Giants, not the New York attacks.

Just saw this on one of those joke websites:

Dear America,
Your 9/11 is our 24/7.
Sincerely, Palestine

I\'d run this song and call that it. Fuck satire, we\'ll adopt it as our national anthem.

I actually forgot it was 9/11 until I turned on the news. Well I didn\'t really forget, but it just hadn\'t crossed my mind.

It\'s nice to honor the fallen and remember the dead, but some people really do go overboard with all the solemnness. Facebook is a prime example of where that happens, which is why I\'m steering clear of it for today.
