You can say nig... well, not on this forum lol. But yeah, it used to be something between African Americans back when they were treated like shit. It was a sort of 'Hey, we're secondary citizens and white people talk to us like we're crap on the bottom of their shoe... oh well. Let's embrace it. Laugh and brush it off because there's not really anything we can do about it.'
America later clued up, but the word stuck around. Vastly over-used now, mainly by guys who think it makes them sound cool. It doesn't, it makes them sound uneducated.

I remember watching a Jay-Z interveiw a while ago and the word was brought and why he uses it and stuff like that. The interviewer said that if a white guy said it to him he'd be pissed, and Jay-Z said " Yeah but if they called me boy i'd be pissed also, we gonna ban boy now?"
While I don't use it at all really, if someone else does and doesn't use in a derogatory way then i geuss it's fine.
