With so much music out there, I just have to draw the line. If an artist isn't unique it tends to slide under my radar.

But, when I say the very best, it is based on history, influence, talent and a general consensus.

For example, R&B, taking into account my personal taste, I lean towards Otis, Mayfield, Marvin, Aretha, Al Green, the Commodores etc. A slightly newer addition would be Alicia Keyes. These particular artists stand out above a rather large pack.

I could delve deeper into any particular genre, looking for the little nuances that separate one band from the next, but it ultimately leaves me disappointed having listened to a lot of 'sameness'.
A truly unique artist doesn't let me make this judgement as their ability is immediately recognizable.

So if Lady Gaga is still around in 30 years, you will say she is 'good'?

You can't always go on history.....just go with what you like. Who gives a shit if an artist has been around for a long time or has influenced others or if 99% of the population likes them? That shouldn't sway you. If you like it, like it because you actually like it, not because of the band's history or influence or that everyone and their mother loves the band.

The Rolling Stones have influenced many bands, have a huge fanbase and have been around forever. I think they fucking suck dick and are boring.

Nobody has replicated Motorheads sound because Motorhead replicate Motorheads sound. For almost every song they've ever made.

I have no idea what you guys are talking about, but I will say this. No one has replicated Motorhead's sound because it is boring as hell. Also, longevity doesn't determine if a band is any good. It often doesn't even mean the band is fiscally sucessful, and even if they are, that still isn't proof of their talent. Chicago and Journey have been around forever, and they are universally regarded as awful bands.
