If you have a really good TV the difference is pretty damn big.

I have a really good tv and with normal movies there is a difference but not enough to warrant the extra money, at least not to me. Totally worth it for animated movies, though.

My laptop came with a blu-ray player and at first I thought it was broken because I threw in a blu-ray version of The Wrestler and that was super grainy. Next thing I tried was Battlestar Galactica and that too was grainy. Turns out that those particular moves were filmed that way. Saved me a headache from having to send my laptop back in but at the same time it's kinda counter productive to have something in HD and have it grainy..

This tbh. Blu Ray does nothing for me. DVD all the way, hence why it's still the far more popular of the two.

You mean apart from the fact that blu-ray is 12x the picture and audio quality of a DVD and the closest you can get, bar the cinema, to what the producer of the film originally intended you to see?

Obviously you have never seen Dark Knight, Zulu, Alien, Space Oddessy, Planet Earth, Terminator 2, Wall-e, Toy Story 3 or Blade Runner on Blu-ray?

Go watch them on DVD, then Blu-ray, and then come back and sprout your incorrent nonsense about it not being a huge difference.

It is, its a massive difference. Thats not just my opionion, that is a technical fact.

The difference is huge if your TV is excellent, as some have said. But if you're a simple person, you don't need Blu Ray to enjoy movies. DVDs are usually fine. 720p isn't that bad, either.

This.
Also why is everyone on about the price? Price of the players or the movies themselves?

What Nitemare said. My roomate just bought a new TV as opposed to mine which I bought maybe 2 years ago and I can see a massive difference in picture quality in HD programing between the two TV's (mine has 1080i, his is 1080p). As for the DVD/Blu Ray debate it depends on what kind of movie i'm watching if I want to shell out the extra couple bucks for the Blu-Ray or not. Something like Clerks, probably not but a visually epic movie like Blade Runner, hell yeah.

It'd be even more stupid to have a show like Walking Dead produced with crystal-clear picture with perfect skin tones and not an ounce of grain in sight.

The reason they've made it grainy is to capture the feel of the show, as its subject matter is inherently gritty and ugly. A story about a band of human survivors relying on one another in the midst of a zombie apocalypse shouldn't look like Up! on Blu-Ray.
