Re: Why do people talk about gays like they are one collective group?
Monolithic groups are an oversimplification of conversation, usually allowing people to keep things superficial enough to be satisfying without being too taxing. It's cheap and lazy. Virtually every statement about gays, blacks, whites, Hispanics, Americans, Europeans, Middle Easterners, Jews, Christians, Muslims, agnostics, atheists, secularists, radicals, anarchists, Republicans, Democrats, Tories, libertarians are factually inaccurate by way of only covering part of the group, even if it is sometimes covering a majority. Usually it doesn't even reflect a majority, rather covering part of your experience with a sliver of that group in the real world, or some report on them. That's stereotyping for you.
