To the OP's question: plants can't think and know what's going on in their surroundings, that kid still can.

In the wild tbh an animal would have to actually track down its food , would have to live in fear of predators , etc. On a farm they live a stress free life unless the specific farm is some kind of corrupt shitheads who do literally torture them.

Eh, yeah except that 98% of animals aren't treated like that outside of third world countries. Over here at least, as some in this thread have pointed out, most animals we eat are shoved into crowded tiny cages their whole lives, or a similar crowded disgusting environment, and then killed by getting chucked alive into a grinder or some other way like that, that doesn't involve a quick gunshot to the head.
Now I'm not a vegetarian, and I like eating meat. I can see why someone would not want to eat meat though, and why care about what they choose to do? However if I find that the food I'm eating lived in a torturous environment or something like that, I try not to eat there or that product any more.
And as for the whole bug thing, if I find a bug in my house, I usually just let it outside. The way I see it, why take a life when it is unnecessary. And who knows, maybe we underestimate how... 'alive' they are. I know that probably doesn't sound like what I'm trying to say, but oh well.
