I think misguided is a better word. Even then they are going by what the bible says.. or at least their interpretation of the book.

I'm surrounded by the types of churches you are referring to. The hellfire and brimstone type. That type of preaching does nothing for me. Hell all the yelling and screaming does nothing for me. I just stay away.

But to say they aren't Christian is a stretch.

Fear is a powerful tool and whomever came up with Christianity and putting the fear of hell in there was indeed a genius move.

Some form of punishments for misdeeds in the after-life was definitely not original. In Ancient Greece/Rome, all people went to the same place but it was divided into punishments versus rewards.

I really can't respect an all powerful being who subjects people to torment for eternity for not believing it. Come on, you're all powerful, all knowing, surely you wouldn't have people burn forever simply for failing to worship you. Not to mention the fact that the reason many of them don't worship the deity is because it failed to adequately prove its existence.

I agree, and I shouldn't have said it. I was slightly irked at the time.

Anyway I've actually been down in Tennessee for a while (although I'm back up in my listed location for the summer) and those same churches were not hard to find. Hard to find was the church I eventually got comfortable with, which was almost an anomaly for the simple fact that it DIDN'T take that same approach.

I'm going to stop myself from ranting further on them though.

Saying it is completely disregarded was the wrong way to put it; for the most part it is as you said, looked at as metaphors. However then that begs the question of how can you tell which stories are metaphorical and which are not. You can't just say the stories that sounds nice are true and those where God kills babies are metaphors.

But as I said I don't really care, it's better to look at the Bible that way, even if it has some problems logically, than that hateful fundamentalist way.

Yeah I can't take credit for that. If so, I'd have to call up Tim Wilson and apologize.

You can use common sense I guess. I mean I look at Genesis, know it isn't true and look at the metaphorical truth in it. The Book of Job I see the story and the "Don't question the creator" and can see the metaphorical message in that. I think there is truths in the Jews leaving Egypt, although I don't know to what extent and truthfully I don't care. So I think there is a bit of both in that. I know the non-believer may dispute that it's not fair to pick and choose just for the sake of making something more believable but I think that's how it is.

It's pretty simple to me really. Jesus taught through allegories right? Pretty much everything is a metaphor at this point then from a Christian standpoint. Divinity was an add on after the fact.

It's still funny. You stated your source. Punishment averted...for now.

One could respond in the following ways.

1). God doesn't interfere in modern day life since its job is done.
2). God wants us to fight this one ourself.
3). This what God wants and is best for us.

PS: God or not, we have free will. Mother Nature and ourselves are responsible for this.

With all of the shit in the world, I'd say that if there is a god he's either watching us without touching or just doesn't care.
