Abortion

Being new here, I'm actually not sure if this is the best place to put this, so I apologise in advance if I'm in the wrong here, I just thought this would be an interesting topic to debate.

The abortion argument is broken down into 2 categories, being either Pro-Life, or Pro-Choice. The meanings of these are often confused, so I'll quickly explain it. Being Pro-choice does not mean being Pro-abortion, which is the biggest misconception of the word. Those that are pro-choice often say they would not have an abortion, although they accept that it's a personal decision for each women. Therefore, Pro-choice is the act of thinking it should be legal, Pro-life is the act of thinking it should be illegal.

I'm 100% Pro-choice, and I doubt anything anyone could say will change that. Abortion is a completely personal choice, who are we to deny a woman one because we don't think her reason is good enough? There are a lot of reasons women may feel an abortion is best for them, whether it's financial problems, age, not being ready to become a parent, rape, domestic violence etc.

The most practical reason I think abortion has to be legal, is that making it illegal won't stop abortions, it will only stop safe abortions. Abortion became legal in the UK in 1960, after so many women died from "back street abortions". I'm sure you've heard the horror stories of coathangers and knitting needles, all of which are true. And the same would happen again if we outlawed it. Abortion has to be legal to keep women safe.

So, what are your thoughts on legalizing cocaine and heroin?

pro choice, but what if a girl was rapped, and became pregnant, it's really something you have to think about.

Much like abortion, I'm for it.

I like bringing this up and getting women really pissed off...

Abortion is legal, and I'm not going to go against that. However, I think it is somewhat irresponsible today when there are other birth control measures (condoms, pill, surgical procedures like vasectomies) available. I'd much rather drop $10 on a pack of jimmies.

I'd say they're too completely different things. A legal abortion is not harmful to the woman, and does not affect anyone else. However, cocaine and heroin kill, and often affect those around the addict also. While I don't care if one person wants to take the drug, when that starts negatively affecting families, then it becomes a problem. The difference between abortion and legalisation of drugs are vast.

Raoe just reiterates why everyone should be Pro-choice - why abortion needs to be legal. If abortion was illegal, except for rape, which I've seen many pro-lifers suggest, all that would happen is you'd see an increase in the amount of people reporting rape - how would you decide who was telling the truth? Rape is hard enough to prove anyway, when a lot of girls start lying just to have an abortion it becomes impossible.

Not to mention, a trial, especially for rape, can take over a year to come to court. An abortion is a bit late then. There is no way abortion can be legal "just for rape".

I agree it's irresponsible, especially those who take no prcautions at all. I'm on the pill, and make sure to use condoms every time I have sex, it's basic to me. However, contraception fails, and people forget. Interestingly, the people most likely to have an abortion are those in their late 20s to early 30s, as opposed to teenage girls, who many people like to speak negatively about in terms of abortion.
