Default People that blame video games for violence

I know they are in the moniroty if you look at the larger scale, but they are very vocal, like the anti-gun crowd. The frist thing that I see wrong is that they want these game either strictly prohibited or out right banned, thinking that this will stop all people from playing the games. This has never been proven in America and would screw us Economically becuase Video games like Grand Theft Auto bring in billions of dollars to the ecomony so we would in turn lose billions if they stopped being produced. Back to the prohibition concept, it didn't work with Alchahol and it wouldn't work with this becuase people still bought beer and still would buy these violent games.

I know their are some studies that say that playing violent games or even being exposed to violence affects the brain in it's developing stages, but I have never seen a study that says it causes violence anymore than anything else would. in fact I beleive it does the opposite of what they are saying , I don't know about you but when I get mad I go play some video games like a wrestling game to beat the computer wrestler up to release my anger, thus making me less likly to beat the crap out of someone in real life.

I also don't get how people like Jack tompson can say that these games are at all raising the crime rate, in fact I think it's been lowering, and are in fact murder simulaters, thats like saying if I play madden i am just as good of a qb as tom Brady or or If i play Call Of Duty then I know what it's like to be in a war zone. Knowing and doing are tywo very different things, you can know how to play a game like guitar hero and not know anything about a guitar, just like i can know how to shoot a m40 on Call Of duty but not know how to load or fire in real life.

I also don't beleive a person who plays a violent game will go and cause violence anymore than a person who has never touched a game. And anybody who says they did it becuase of a game is just dillusional or not taking repsoibilty, i guess since you can drive drunk in GTA 4 I will think it's great to do it in real life. I also just think it's dumb for people to say the game developers are in anyway repsoible for people commiting murder.

Tehy also are just following a trend to blame anything new that the young crowd likes to them being violent, it's like Murder or robbing is something new, i'm pretty sure that since there has been a person there has been a law breaker.

I honestly am for ratings as I think it help people make edutated decisions about what they watch or play, but they are only as good as the person veiwing the rating. I hate it when a mom or dad says that they didn't know a game like Grand Theft Auto would harm their 8 year old even though the game's name is a crime and is rated mature. It's just irresposible.

I'm sorry if this has been done before but i'm just tired of things getting a bad rep for people not wanting to be held accountible for their actions.

Good Rant.

It's as simple as this though, no one likes to own up to their duties and responsibilities as a(n) parents/role model/positive influential figure that they figure out the thing to pinpoint the blame on whether it's Violence, sex, or social attitudes and exposures. Usually it's the violence part and now games like GTA are in the forefront because of the popularity. Remember when the WWF was in the fore front 8 years ago by the FCC and Bozell?

People need to understand and learn how to controls themselves and if they have kids/siblings etc. I mean, I have GTA 4 and some of my cousins wanna play it, but I'll be DAMNED if I ever let them play it. They are 10 and 8. They are too immature to play a game like that.

But yea, no matter what, at the end of the day people will always find something to scapegoat. That's the world we live in. It's a shame, but it'll never change.

^yeah I beleive in owning up to your mistakes. I seems people always want to point to anything else but themselves, it takes a real man to say "I made a mistake", it's sad when i seem to be smarter than people 2 or 3 times my age.

I only really play the Tomb Raider games and my 2 girls love watching me play. They don't run around vaulting over the furniture afterwards, nor do they go "Ah-ha" when they pick anything up.
Society likes to put the blame on other people. People like to diminish themselve of responsiblity so they'll find something to blame. If it's not video games, it's music and movies.
When I was a teenager, yes there was a time, games like Dungeons & Dragons were banned at my school as there were people taking those roll playing games too seriously and linked then to violence and suicide amongst it's users.
I wouldn't let my kids play some of the more violent games, to me that is common sense.

I personally agree with you. I think the whole thing is bullshit.

As for the studies that have been carried out well in these cases the experiments have usually measured agression levels. And while it's true that they do find after playing violent video games your agression levels are higher, that's pretty expected.

There's a significant lack of publsihed findings on the area in general. I only know this as it's what I wrote an essay on for my psychology elective.

Even if they ever do truly believe that violent video games go with violent actions, causation will be nearly impossible to prove as they'll find it hard to eliminate all other factors.
