*Ahem* Numbers are the basis for maths, without numbers then maths would be meaningless when you break it down or try to explain it, granted, some forms of maths substitute letters for numbers but letters only are substitutes and make no sense on their own.

Also, he's wrong. The basis for maths/math (depending on where you're from) is actually far more complicated, and goes on to assume that nothing is right, so one plus one may not even equal two. Everything else is built up from there, using letters, numbers and symbols.
