PWG's Death To All But Metal & Threemendous III are two fantastic shows from earlier this year featuring some of the biggest names on the US Indie scene. Early ROH (up to 2008) is essential viewing & if you have particular favourites from that era (Danielson, Punk, Aries, Joe, Nigel etc.) ROH have put out some excellent 2-disc compilation DVDs. I'm just starting to get into Chikara & it's so easy & fun to watch. Their King of Trios 2012 shows are superb.

You also owe it to yourself to check out New Japan Pro Wrestling, which is easily the best wrestling promotion in the world right now - youtube has loads of great NJPW matches & full shows from this year, and you'll find plenty of recommendations in the 2012 MOTYC thread.

Thank you!
you'd be better off hoping that a movement comes along to change the whole industry for the better starting with the indies and then support that

Ugh. You start a thread demanding more drama, dynamism & passion from this section, and then toss cold water on a newcomer's enthusiasm. Weak.

Definitely start with ROH's old stuff. 2005 - 2008 are all brilliant years, 2004 is also great. I'd check out Danielson, Punk, Joe, Aries and Nigel stuff first since you already are familiar with them from WWE and TNA. Danielson especially is someone who's indie work everyone should watch, he's got that Flair vibe going on (in his title reign especially) and he's brilliant at playing a heel or a face. Don't think he ever had a 'bad' match in that time period.

Some of the feuds ROH put on were so good. Try and check out the ROH vs CZW feud (can't tell you exactly which show it started on in 05, but it finished in 06 at Death Before Dishonor IV in an amazing cage of death match), the Nigel/Danielson rivalry especially considering you like more technical stuff (Their match at the 6th Year Anniversary show is the best ROH match ever imo, and one of the best of the whole decade). Joe/Punk matches go without saying, and look at The Summer Of Punk for awesome storytelling as well as great matches.

Anyway, that's the ROH stuff I's suggest to get someone in to it.

I think watching old ROH would make him hate the current scene. His expectations would be too high.

Support local Indies, go to your local shows.

OP, it all depends on what you like. You mentioned technical, but since you also said you liked the Attitude Era, I'm guessing you might enjoy stuff that has stories and continuing rivalries as well, since AE was pretty character-driven, when you think about it.

I know most everyone else has already said it, but old ROH matches are worth looking at if you want to start with names and faces you recognize and see some strong technical talent. It was a sad day for me when my cable provider dropped The Fight Network. It showed The Best of ROH several times a week (plus old CMLL, which I also miss).

Chikara has characters and storylines; sometimes it gets a little goofy but they have great matches too. If you're interested in looking outside the US, I think you might like the Japanese style. Check out a few matches from NJPW and see if that's something you'd want to follow.

Of course, you could pop by your local indy company's next show. Most every city has at least one, and they all love getting new fans.
