Yes, I know the title sounds like a joke opener haha.

Today I went to a local show here in Singapore (Singapore Pro Wrestling) with a group of friends who also brought some of their friends. There were first timers to the event (people who never watched wrestling in their life, people who watched as kids and stopped watching) as well as people who are casuals (attended the previous events but don't watch Wrestling online/TV) and guys like me who watch Jap wrestling, WWE, indie shows.

This event had Jason Lee from CWC in the main event, huge bodybuilder matches, comedy matches, tag matches, spot fests, surprises as well as a legit interruption in the intergender tag match when a fan rolled into the ring.

After the match i was legit surprised to hear how one person who has never watched wrestling before really enjoy it, but from a way different perspective from me. She was talking about how she felt for the Ref during the ref bump, why she hated it when one of the losers returned to the ring to deliver chair shots to the winner and how the annoying the authority figure was when he removed the Power Warrior (the champ) from the title match to set up a triple threat match. She also asked why the fan rolled into the ring and if he was a wrestler too.

One of the casuals also talked to me about how he really liked this cruiserweight because he was athletic and did all the high flying moves. He didn't really fixate on the numerous botches that I spotted immediately.

Most of my friends did not understand what "Nakamura", "1,2....SWEET", "Botchamania" chants were about.

I kind of thought to myself, who enjoyed it more? Does that even matter? Am I just displaying my insecurities as a wrestling fan?

All in all, I think I managed to get at least 8/10 of them to come back for the next event. And I'm kind of proud of that.

Have you guys ever brought non-hardcore fans to a wrestling show and what were your experiences?

It's always interesting to watch different types of wrestling with different types of fans. It's always a great reminder that run ins and evil authority figures really do still have the intended effect on people.

I've not taken anyone to any shows but i can occasionally get them to watch something. I have a mate who doesn't watch wrestling but he did play the old playstation games. So I showed him some NJPW and Dragon Gate and he loves it. It has suplexes, powerbombs, brainbusters and piledrivers. Thats what he wants and any WWE sillyness would really put him off.

The big plan is to use my birthday to force everyone to a PROGRESS show. Although getting tickets would be a nightmare.

SPW is the first wrestling school/promotion in the region and started in 2012. They put on shows every 3 months on average and have an affiliation with Hoholun's promotion in HK, Dragon Gate (Cima, Big R Shimizu, Masa Takanashi), some aussie promotions, Emi Sakura's promotion and some of the southeast asian organisations.
Here's the website.

The talent are mostly homegrown guys and it's a pretty different atmosphere than everywhere else. If you are expecting a Japan like crowd, you'll be disappointed. For a conservative country, the shows can get pretty rowdy. As a foreigner, you may not be able to understand all the chants. Singapore is a cultural melting pot. The chants come in Cantonese, Hokkien, Mandarin, Tamil, Malay, English. But all in all its a really awesome show.

PM me if you want to go to the show. We can go together. I'll fill in the gaps for you.

Well, I regularly attend shows by an indie company here in NZ, they're called Impact Pro Wrestling and are probably the biggest wrestling company in the country.

It's obvious when people who aren't wrestling fans come along to the shows lol. It's mainly cos they always look a bit confused and bewildered :lol And you can always spot the people who've never been to an IPW show before, cos they have no clue who is who, who is face, who is heel etc. There's a bunch of regulars that go to every show, including my Mum and I (we've been going to their shows since 2013), and we lead the charge in chants.

At the last show, one of the most beloved faces in the company turned heel in a shocker, and everybody was booing him, even the people who clearly weren't wrestling fans, it was GREAT. And during the main event, they fought out into the crowd and one of the wrestlers went through a table, and these people behind us were like OH MY GOD :lmao It was really shocking to them, but normal to us LOL.

I seriously need to take some people who aren't fans to one of their shows and see what they think, cos they'd probably enjoy it, the atmosphere is so fun.

I always get so self conscious if I bring friends to shows. I really want them to have fun and as a wrestling fan because of that dismissive attitude a lot of society has towards wrestling. But i'm always pleasantly surprised how many ppl told me that they will come to the next show. So yeah, bring your fans down and support indie wrestling!

I love watching with non wrestling fans. It gives a greater perspective. That is the perspective that this site is absolutely obsessed with wrestling and WAY too into it.

It's refreshing watching someone not know who will win, or get angry at cheating. When some one screams "but that's not allowed" it reminds you...it's just tv designed for entertainment!

People are amazed when you predict a heel turn or dirty win. It helps to take a step back from this site.
