Chikara Discussion Thread

About 10 years ago when I started to delve into the world of indy-wrestling Chikara was one of the hottest companies out there along with the likes of ROH & PWG.

I remember browsing these boards for info and updates on the company and there was tons of content and seemingly a large fan base within our little community here on wrestlingforum. Fast-forward all this time and nothing, unless you count the file sharing section.

I'm heading out to my first ever live Chikara show today and have taken a few years off the product (to be honest when they did that bizarre reset, I lost interest.) So with all this in mind, I thought I'd search the forum to catch up but seeing as there's nothing here I wanted to ask, why?

Why is there no discussion on Chikara here any more? Has everyone just fallen out of love with the product? Has it's fans just stopped watching pro-wrestling or just stopped using the boards?

*Side note, if there actually is some discussion on here about it somewhere apologies but I can't find it!

Jelly that you get to see Quack vs Johnny Kidd. Would love to see that match. From what I've seen, the product is still good, just not as good as it used to be, imo. Last few years I've only watched a handful of Chikara shows, but the wrestlers involved with the promo that are really standouts to me are Drew Gulak, Eddie Kingston, Icarus, Shynron, Kimber Lee, and Snowflake. Enjoy the show.

Yeah, that's why I stopped watching. Going back around 5 years ago when I was a really big fan there were so many quality guys on the roster and the guys who weren't that great as technical wrestlers had fantastic gimmicks. Then after the reset things got a bit silly with the bullfrogs and the Armenian whatevers.

As far as tonight show goes, it was fantastic. The Kidd vs Quack match went on last and was exactly what you'd want from them. The semi-main was an 8-person tag match that truly embodied the Chikara spirit (lucha style mixed in with US indie and World of Sport, with numerous home grown talents represented.)

Definitely, why couldn't they just reset when there was a new season?!

Don't know if you can answer this for me but why do Chikara's guys not feature elsewhere? Like from the current roster, Eddie Kingston's had stints in CZW, ROH, etc. But besides him all their guys just seem to stay put? Why's that?

I've heard that it's kind of frowned upon with Quackenbush's guys that he trains. I listened to an interview with Chris Hero and he talks about him and the guy sounds like he could be difficult to work for. He puts Chikara over anything (which makes sense) but it's to the point where he expects a lot of his guys to put Chikara ahead of their own careers. Chris Hero said that when he got one of his first big tours of Japan (like his first tour with NOAH or something like that) Quack had a really negative reaction and was pissed because his plans weren't going to work out with booking. Their relationship soured after that and the main reason was that Hero had higher priorities than Chikara. I kind of got the impression from Hero that with a lot of the guys that he trains if they take outside bookings and it interferes with Chikara in anyway at all he would stop booking them.

Chikara today seems kind of cult like. They've been doing the opposite of what most companies do. They don't try to expand and they try to just keep their core fans happy. So you get this weird isolated bubble in the wrestling world that is Chikara. I heard Quack say in an interview that he doesn't think the future of wrestling is mass appeal but it's getting your bubble and giving them the exact product that they want.

Never heard of this promotion before, looking around the web I see a lot of people talking about it but still somehow can't find a lot of information about what it is all about. Might try a seven day free trial on their site and watch some shows.

Simon Gotch is returning to Chikara for King of Trios!

Simon Grimm, who was known as Simon Gotch in WWE, will be part of CHIKARA's biggest weekend of the year.

On Friday, CHIKARA announced Grimm would be part of King of Trios, teaming with Dasher Hatfield and Mr. Touchdown as "House Throwback." King of Trios 2017 takes place September 1-3 in Wolverhampton, England.

Grimm actually made a few appearances with CHIKARA before he signed with WWE, working there as Ryan Drago -- a 1900s throwback grappler gimmick quite similar to the Gotch persona, which led to him forming The Vaudevillains with Aiden English. After winning the NXT Tag Titles, the Vaudevillains got a call-up to the main WWE roster in the spring of 2016.
