Furthermore, this was a great match from New Japan; Tanahashi vs Okada from Wrestle Kingdom 10 earlier this month. New Japan Pro Wrestling is arguably the best wrestling promotion in the world today. Though a few top guys have recently left the company the roster is still deep and talented, the match quality is usually very high and the main events they put on can be incredible.
I linked the English version commentated by Matt Striker (though I prefer the Japanese commentary to be honest). New Japan Pro Wrestling puts on more amazing matches every year than any other promotion in my opinion. The style in New Japan is physical and stiff, strong and rough; yet elegantly technical. As a huge fan of New Japan Pro Wrestling I highly recommend you give them a look.
It should be noted that neither NJPW or Lucha Underground are indie promotions. NJPW is currently the major national promotion in Japan and Lucha Underground is an episodic wrestling TV show filmed in LA. PWG is an indie promotion putting out excellent shows every few months in which they showcase the best talent of other indies from the US and worldwide. I suggest you check out PWG if you want that genuine indie style; here's a video of what they do.
I would also say check out NXT. Although they are a part of WWE and so are definitely not an indie promotion, many of the guys there work an indie-esque style. NXT puts on some awesome events on the network, the weekly show is good and a lot of the matches are solid. WWE have signed some really great talent recently; and since most of them will be in NXT first at least for now it's well worth watching.

Definitely Lucha, around 5 episodes in you'll understand why everyone is going crazy about it.
Despite the odd good match ROH is pretty fucking depressing to watch, if you want that cafeteria vibe I'd recommend watching soms 'best of' PWG.
Daniel Bryan / Dolph Ziggler / Dean Ambrose / Seth Rollins / CM Punk / Stone Cold / Chris Jericho / Chris Benoit / Jeff Hardy / The Undertaker / Mickie James / AJ / Natalya / Bellas / Naomi / Sasha Banks / Bayley / Dana Brooke / New Day / Cage / Dario Cueto / Vince McMahon / Vince Russo / Paul Heyman
Technically, those aren't indie promotions. It's worth pointing that out. That being said...
They are all good choices, but I would rate Lucha Underground as the most exciting thing in wrestling today, simply because they are doing things no one else is doing
And yes, Lucha Underground is very friendly towards English speakers, unlike New Japan. So that might be a point in Lucha Underground's favor over New Japan.
If you get into New Japan though, you might as well watch ROH and vice versa as well as the two promotions have developed a close relationship and share a lot of talent
What makes Lucha Underground great is that they place more emphasis on storytelling than anything in wrestling. They present their product like an actual television series. They also break a lot of rules. They do things WWE doesn't do anymore or never did in the first place. They are not a PG product, which means swearing, blood, alcohol, violence, anything goes. And they treat women like equals which means there is no women's division even though they have female wrestlers. Everything you loved about ECW or Attitude Era WWE is there. They also have some familiar faces you've seen in WWE like Rey Mysterio
They're getting more and more attention lately too, with even Steve Austin and The Rock talking about them
1. LUCHA UNDERGROUND - Hands down, the greatest wrestling show I have ever witnessed, every episode is truly a blessing from the wrestling gods themselves. You wanna start this with SEASON 1. DO. IT. NOW.
2. RING OF HONOR - This is a great promotion for great matches and great storylines. Production value is sub-par.
3. NEW JAPAN PRO WRESTLING - The best way to catch up with this is to watch NJPW on AXS, which shows the big stories/matches from a few years ago (2013) and it's in English, so that's a plus. Once you are caught up, you can catch the PPV shows. Like ROH, NJPW consists of great matches (with a greater emphasis on tag wrestling) and slow-build rivalries.
4. NXT - a breath of fresh, great storylines, but the matches become predictable due to the sour taint of WWE.
I think I'm leaning towards more of ROH or Lucha but I have some questions about Lucha...is it English or Spanish? What's the deal about it? Why is everyone going crazy about it?
Coming down to those options I would pick LU without hesitation and it's a great place to get your feet wet into alternatives to WWE. It is available in both English and Spanish, depending on your preference. The reason everyone is going crazy about it is because it's everything we want out of wrestling done in a cool, new, modern way. Great characters, great storylines, great matches. I really don't have anything negative to say about them. It's a great show to supplement your other wrestling viewing habits with. And as with most TV shows, it's a good idea to start with season 1 and watch the first 3-4 episodes before you can get a good feel for it. Since season 2 just premiered last night, I'll leave a link to the trailer:
There's some other good suggestions in this thread and despite the trolls in WWE Gen that lump all of the "indies" together, they're actually all a little different from each other and some of them aren't even indies at all. You mentioned RoH, LU, and NJPW and all of them are different. Check out a few episodes from each show and see which style you like then go from there. Obviously, my favorite is LU so I hope you start with that one first.
So I started watching a few episodes of LU and whilst its entertaining I don't think it really competes with the WWE.
LU is "different" its definitely more of a TV show rather than Sports Entertainment. I'm still trying to get used to the different camera angles and the way the cut promos. Its fun, refreshing and entertaining but not on WWEs level IMO.
LU is good, I'll keep watching. Hopefully I can watch all of Season 1 quick, I want to start Season 2 soon. I think LU will be my side show to WWE & NXT.
Seth Rollins / Bray Wyatt / Roman Reigns
Brock Lesnar / Dolph Ziggler / Kevin Owens
Nikki Bella / Sasha Banks / Emma
Enzo & Cass
Undertaker / Steve Austin / JBL
Chris Jericho / Kurt Angle / Eddie Guerrero
I think that snobby attitude that your wrestling career means nothing unless you go to WWE would piss off a lot of wrestlers. And I tip my hat to her for the bit about WWE brainwashing, because that's exactly what they do to both their talent as well as their fanbase
SERIOUSLY TNA FANS, JUST LET IT DIE
WWE FANS, STOP ENCOURAGING WWE'S PERTH BEFORE MORE HORRIBLE THINGS HAPPEN
