Your pick for wrestler of the year 2014?

Who do you think deserves to be called wrestler of the year 2014?

I personally always have a list of all the matches that I have rated **** or higher, and my top wrestlers of the year list is always based on that. So here's my top-10 wrestlers of 2014:
10. Zack Sabre, Jr. (4 **** or better matches)
9. Kyle O'Reilly (4 **** or better matches)
8. Adam Cole (4 **** or better matches)
7. Tomohiro Ishii (4 **** or better matches)
6. Hiroshi Tanahashi (4 **** or better matches)
5. Sami Zayn (4 **** or better matches)
4. Shinsuke Nakamura (4 **** or better matches)
3. Cesaro (5 **** or better matches)
2. AJ Styles (5 **** or better matches)
1. Daniel Bryan (6 **** or better matches)

Re: Your pick for wrestler of the year 2014?

To me Daniel Bryan isn't anywhere near wrestler of the year since he was only active 4 or 5 months out of the entire year. To me, WOTY is someone who puts on consistent good matches for all 12 months and is prominently featured in the company. With that being said, I'm going to make an exception this year because I believe my pick is a special case. Imo, the Wrestler of the Year is Brock Lesnar.

Wait, what? But didn't you just say D-Bryan wasn't eligible because he missed most of the year?

Yes. I also said that there's an exception this year who surpasses Bryan.

Brock Lesnar fits the true credentials of Wrestler of the Year. Despite wrestling on a part-time basis, there's no denying that he's made a HUGE impact each time. Let's not forget this is the man who put the 1 in 21-1. Also, this guy murdered John Cena.

But that's all storyline mumbo-jumbo, what about the 5 star classics? Fuck that. That's why there's other awards such as Match of the Year and Best Technician. Let's not confuse Wrestler of the Year with Best Technician like so many people do every year. It's like confusing Best Picture with Best Cinematography. The two aren't the same.

So yeah, Brock Lesnar is my 2014 Wrestler of the Year. Also, here are some of my other awards since we're in that time of year.

Best Tag Team: The Young Bucks
Most Improved: Seth Rollins/Ricochet
Rookie of the Year: Trevor Lee
Best Gimmick: Damien Mizdow- The Miz's Stunt Double
Best Weekly Show: NXT
Best Major Show: Survior Series
Match of the Year: The Shield vs The Wyatt Family Elimination Chamber

Re: Your pick for wrestler of the year 2014?

Lets not confuse Best Technician with Most Outstanding Wrestler? Anywho, I view WOTY on an in-ring basis HEAVILY thus the award in my opinion would most certainly go to Hechicero. And I really would have a hard to justifying anyone else. Consistently good-great all year with some singles work to back up the standard CMLL trios load.

Now for the case of Brock, where is it? Cause if you're using those two instances as the basis and feel that is just cause for him then we are just so far away from each other for what this type of award should mean that I don't think I would be able to understand. It feels like business would have to come into play in that formula, which I am not for, otherwise it is more of a PWI #1 type deal.

Re: Your pick for wrestler of the year 2014?

AJ Styles won a major title and established himself as an equal with 3 Gods in NJPW.

Best Tag Team: ReDragon
Most Improved: Ricochet
Rookie of the Year: Need to think more on this
Best Gimmick: RD Evans, the streak was the greatest thing in professional wrestling
Best Weekly Show: NXT
Best Major Show: Vague question, what's considered major? G1 Climax was the best event this year. The best day was day 7.
Match of the Year: Tanahashi vs Shibata or Tomoro Ishii vs Goto and I really enjoyed Syles vs Suzuki and Syles vs Okada

Edit: I almost forgot Kyle O'Reilly vs AJ Styles was on my 5* match list

Re: Your pick for wrestler of the year 2014?

In ring is all that matters to me, and in that regard I really only see a small grouping in consideration: Hechicero, El Barbaro Cavernario, Virus, and Timothy Thatcher. Of those Thatcher is the clear choice with a body of work that no one really comes close to touching, including five of my top seven matches of the year.

Re: Your pick for wrestler of the year 2014?

Of the guys listed id go with Tanahashi.

My two personal favorites of the year would how ever be Adam Cole and Kyle O'Reilly.

Kyle O'Reilly is going to be a mega star one day. I love the guys matches, I wish more American pro wrestling matches were like his. Easily my new favorite wrestler.

New Japan Pro Wrestling, All Japan Pro Wrestling, Ring of Honor, Pro wrestling Noah, old school National Wrestling Alliance all >>> WWE

I agree with your post, and I think overall Tanahashi is so well versed he'd win it every year. It would be like Shaq winning MVP every year in his prime. You couldn't stop him from looking amazing. That's the only reason I can't vote for Tanahashi even though my heart wants to.

Re: Your pick for wrestler of the year 2014?

O'Reilly has grown a lot on me this year. I use to absolutely hate him! Of course, there were odd moments here and there where I would like his work (Hybrid Rules match with Cole easily comes to mind) but I never started to consistently like him till late late year. I don't know what it was. Maybe, he's always been great and it just took me long to notice.

I was also considering AJ Styles but I haven't seen much of his NJPW work. But he did make a huge impact on the business this year. It's just not that mt knowledge of his 2014 run is limited.
