If you had a business that makes the money that WWE does on Mania weekend you wouldn't let anyone else near you to sponge off YOUR hard work either. If you say you would you're either a liar or a terrible business person.
I don't know if it actually does take away business from WWE. Had there been no indy wrestling in New Orleans at all I don't think I would have spent a dime more on WWE. I would have spent a lot more time drinking in the French Quarter but I wouldn't have just decided to go to Axxess instead. Axxess doesn't interest me at all, Hall of Fame doesn't interest me at all, taking away things that I like won't make me decide to go things I don't want to go to. If anything it's more likely to make me just want to stay home.
There are a million other things to do in the Bay Area. Giants, Sharks, Warriors, Stanford/Palo Alto, Six Flags, Alcatraz, the various piers, Disney Museum, historic theaters, Golden Gate Bridge, just to name a few. It's a trip I strongly recommend for reasons that go far beyond wrestling.
I'm sure there is a lot of stuff to do but I need all that stuff to be a close proximity as I will be 24 next Wrestlemania and won't be able to rent a car without paying a fortune. And honestly, the area in general isn't really one of the places that I would ever consider going on my own. I have sports teams/piers/historic places/nice bridges/theme parks within 5 hours of my house. I don't need to fly across the country for that stuff.
Yeah, massive bragging rights for Gabe next year having drawn an average of what, 200 per show in New Orleans? This is a slight blow to ROH, the rest is irrelevant.
I think he did better than that. I went to the Friday Night show and he had a decent crowd. It just looked bad because everyone was really scattered out around the wrestling venue.
The WWN venue was utter shit (not the Tulane campus, just the logistics and layout for wrestling), but Gabe is right to some degree: I was actually able to walk there from my hotel while my friends went to the HOF instead.
Tulane's campus was amazing. Really great place to walk through. Terrible venue for a wrestling show though.
