Default Help me understand Dragon Gate USA

I've been to a couple of live shows (before WM 27 and 30) and have been entertained, but can someone clue me in on a few things, like:

1) How many 'gates' are there? Why are there so many? Why do people open them? Do they ever get closed? Seriously, is there any kind of hierarchy to the "Open the Whatever Gate" championships?

2) What, exactly, are the six-man tag rules (and I know it's a puro thing, but still)? I realize that they call them tag teams, but they don't have to tag. So why do they not just call them teams? Why does anyone ever tag? I've seen people just randomly step in the ring and his partner, who was getting a beatdown, roll out. And 4 minutes later someone is trying to get all the way across the ring to make a hot tag ... so why doesn't someone just step in and save him the trouble, and the beating? Or why doesn't he just roll out instead?

3) Why does Teddy Hart have a cat? Why does he have two females with him when it only takes one to carry the cat? What does the cat have to do with anything?

4) I enjoy some of the silliness to it all, but I obviously don't get something. Is there a premise or a "DG universe" that has certain rules and ongoing reality that ties it all together. Can somone explain it all?

I don't really follow DG USA but followed DG Japan for awhile so I can help with a few of your questions.

1) In Japan the belts are ranked with Open The Dream Gate being the top belt with Open The Brave Gate and Owarai Gate being Midcard and Lower Midcard Titles.

2) Dragon Gate tag matches are under Luchadore rules which means as soon as one wrestler hits the floor someone else can immediately rush in. It keeps the matches fast paced and Dragon Gate has been this way for as long as I can remember.

Of course. In Japan, the Open the Dream Gate title is the top championship. The Open the Brave Gate title is the secondary singles title; strangely, it has a weight limit, despite the fact that pretty much everybody in Dragon Gate is a light heavyweight. There are two tag titles: Open the Triangle Gate and Open the Twin Gate, for trios and two-man teams, respectively. I believe the Triangle Gate belts are the more prestigious of the two, given the prevalence of trios matches in Dragon Gate. There's also the Open the Owarai Gate title, which is basically a title for comedy wrestlers.

In DGUSA, there's just the Open the Freedom Gate title (main belt) and Open the Twin Gate title (tag titles).

It's not a puro thing; it's a lucha thing. Pretty much all of the original DG regulars were trained by or with Ultimo Dragon, so there's a heavy lucha influence to everything that goes on there. Theoretically, there's only supposed to be one guy from each team in the ring at a time, so you're not supposed to be able to just run in and take over for a partner on the bad end of a control segment, but leaving the ring is just as good as a tag, so if you do, and he rolls out, then you're legal. People still make hot tags because that's been a super-effective storytelling tool for basically as long as tag team wrestling has been a thing. The kayfabe explanation seems to be that the heels keep the FIP in the ring, preventing him from leaving and thus forcing the ref to keep his partners on the outside. He makes the hot tag instead of just rolling out because crowds pop bigger for hot tags.

The cat, like Teddy Hart himself, has nothing to do with anything. You are welcome, and indeed encouraged, to just pretend Teddy Hart, and everything that goes with him, isn't there, cat included.

I mean... yes? But no more than any other wrestling company. Pretty much every promotion has its own rules and history; why should DG be different?

Hm..I thought there was a rule in the tag bouts where if a wrestler/team was on offense or in control, they did not have to make a tag as well. Is that true?

Damn. I went to see Dragon Gate USA in NOLA last week for the first time and had no idea there were any nuances at all. The cat was awesome and senseless.

WHat was cool was seeing the guys from this promotion wrestling for Kaiju right after. It was so strange watching wrestling on a stage in a school auditorium but I loved it. Have to see Ricochet was fantastic, Hero was solid in the ring, and I also enjoyed Gargano. Knew absolutely nothing about this promotion going in but I'd watch it live again. Different to see the same wrestlers in multiple matches and I'm glad as Ricochet was going hard. The only thing I disliked was their women's match.

Always thought a good way to evolve tag wrestling would be not to use hot tags. And that one partner would be wrestling in the ring while the other would wait outside of the ring. You always have to have someone inside the ring so instead of making a tag, you have to slide in the ropes to go outside and the guy who's outside then go into the ring to replace his parnter. But he has to do it in 5 seconds(cause he loses the match or the belts).

This could be a new way to create drama. For example when one guy leaves the ring and the other who's outside want to go in but he's too injured and it takes time for him to go in, people would be pulling for him to go in(if he's a face).

Thanks for the help.

But is "open the ___ gate" just a Japanese way of signifying championship, or does it have a bigger meaning in the canon of Dragon Gate: or to ask more plainly, are these guys opening the gate to something?

Like I think Osirian Portal's mythos was supposed to be that they were transported from ancient Egypt through a time portal of some sort -- or am I just making that up to explain it to myself?

Well, the Portal are Chikara guys, and Chikara follows a kind of comic-book logic that seems to me to be totally unique in wrestling. Dragon Gate operates on standard wrestling logic, or seems to. The "Open the ___ Gate" nomenclature isn't a "Japanese way of signifying a championship"; you'll notice no other puro promotion uses anything like it. It's just a thing Dragon Gate uses to set themselves apart. It's just a name.

Yeah it's just a DG thing. No real significance. IIRC Doesn't the Dream Gate belt actually have a Gate on it though? That's why the challengers have a key and if they win it they get to open it? Perhaps it's a literal thing? Do all the belts have something similar? The only one I've ever seen enough to know is the OTDG belt.
