Questions from a Potential NJPW Fan

Although I've seen a few Misawa vs. Hansen matches here and there, as well as some Kobashi matches, I'm not all that familiar with wrestling in Japanese promotions. I'm interested in watching NJPW on a regular basis, as I want to have a alternative to WWE/TNA, but I have a few questions to ask before I'm able to enjoy watching the product to the best of my ability?

1. For NJPW, are they a storyline centered promotion or does wrestling matter most?
2. Just who in the hell is this Okada guy?
3. Where can I watch NJPW? I assume for American viewers, we have to watch episodes it on a website.
4. If NJPW has any relevant storylines, what are they and who are the wrestlers involved in them? You don't have to try that hard to satisfy this question. Anything newer than six months can do.

That's all I can think of for now. Thanks.

Re: Questions from a Potential NJPW Fan

1. Bit of a mix from what I've seen. There are storylines but the focus seems to be on the matches.

2. The future of NJPW. TNA had this guy for like 2 years and foolishly did nothing with him.

3. The legal option is NJPWs uStream page where they stream iPPVs and other shows. IVPvideos has a ton of NJPW stuff too (bootlegs) and it's generally easy to find on YouTube, Dailymotion, and torrent sites.

4. The only one I can think of right now is Bullet Club. It's a group of Gaijin (Foreigners) invaders lead by Prince Devitt. I don't keep a super close eye on NJPW storyline wise so others can expand on it.

1) They have rivalries rather than US style storylines. Wrestling matters the most but they're are clear rivalries. They just not promo focused or based on silly soap opera angles.

2) Okada started off in Toryumon but got picked up by New Japan as a rookie who they put a lot of stock in even as a rookie. He then got sent to TNA where he dropped off the radar before returning to New Japan and being pushed as a permanent fixture in the main straight away. Now he's one of the top stars.

3) You can buy their iPPVs on uStream. They also have shows that air on Japanese TV exclusively which you can download off somewhere like XWT or stream off DailyMotion.

4) Don't have the time to go into detail but nobody else does then I will tomorrow. Read through the guide I linked. It'll give you a strong introduction to the promotion. It's a little outdated but the bulk of it is still relevant to a new fan.

Re: Questions from a Potential NJPW Fan

1. Like any other wrestling promotion, there's storylines.

2. One of the most fucking awesome wrestlers in Japan is who he is.

3. Torrents, Youtube and the like.

4. The only storyline I know of is Bullet Club. Not so sure what their deal is though. Meh, I just watch it for the matches.

Re: Questions from a Potential NJPW Fan

It's worth noting that if you're looking for a hop on point, don't make it the current World Tag League tour. It's been mediocre at best & New Japan's weakest of the year.

Best shows from 2013 are Wrestle Kingdom 7, Invasion Attack, Dominion, G1 Climax 23 Days 2, 4, 8 & 9, and King of Pro Wrestling.

Re: Questions from a Potential NJPW Fan

I'd suggest you to fully hop on the NJPW train from January when their Wrestlemania equivalent- Wrestle Kingdom 8 comes live from the Tokyo Dome.

As for your questions:

1. It's puroresu- so wrestling is the most important. Their storylines and rivalries mostly revolve around the title belts which are treated with very high prestige and sometimes just a good old fashioned rivalry to see who is the better man. In ring action is what matters most.

2. Just who the hell are you?

Lol, nah Okada is the guy in my avi and sig. He's just 25 years old, a legend in the making, easily top 3 in the world atm and New Japan's future. Also, possesses the most beautiful finishing move in wrestling today- the Rainmaker.

3. Mostly I just follow the ppvs. A day or two after their broadcast, they are usually uploaded on Youtube.

4. Well, they have their annual G1 tournament. This year was the 23rd edition and won by Tetsuya Naito. Winner of the G1 these days gets a MITB style contract where he can face the IWGP Heavyweight Champion at WrestleKingdom in the Tokyo Dome. So, in January we're getting Naito vs defending champion Okada.

Nakamura and Tanahashi have been like the Orton and Cena of NJPW for many years. Haven't crossed paths in like 3 years but they will finally clash at WrestleKingdom for the IWGP Intercontinental Championship.

Bullet Club is a heel stable of the gaijins- Prince Devitt, Karl Anderson, Young Bucks, Bad Luck Fale, Doc Gallows and Tama Tonga. They demand respect and cause interference in their stable members' matches. Devitt will defend his Junior Heavyweight Title against Kota Ibushi at the Dome. Young Bucks are the Junior Tag champs, they will be in a match too.

These are the important storylines I can think of. We're most likely also getting Katsuyori Shibata vs Hirooki Goto, who have had a great series of matches this year.

I suggest watching WrestleKingdom 7, Invasion Attack, Dominion, G1 Climax 23 (days 2,4,8,9 like flagsabbath mentioned), King of Pro Wrestling from 2013 first so you get familiar with the wrestlers and pick a favorite

There's an events database here.... http://www.cagematch.net/?id=8&nr=7&page=4

Joe Lanza at Voices Of Wrestling writes decent NJPW reviews with storyline details etc.

Re: Questions from a Potential NJPW Fan

Okada is dope. He's like the Ric Flair(in his prime) of NJPW. Best of the Super Juniors, G1 Climax and January 4th show are all great PPVs to watch. Bullet Club is an nWo like Gaijin (foreign) invaders angle that have great wrestling skills and it's probably the best storyline in wrestling today.

Benoit, Nakamura, Punk, Flair, Styles, Karl Anderson, Okada, Ishii, Devitt
