Is this the worst Takeover card on paper in a while?

Apparently the quality of the NXT product is finally gonna reflect on a Takeover. Usually the Takeover are the most consistently good shows WWE has to offer and while, with the call ups and injuries the NXT roster have been affected, it didn't show it much in their Takeovers, but with 1 week until the next Takeover the card doesn't show much promise. Let's see

Roode vs Nakamura. While both guys are charismatic and I bet they will have awesome entrances, Nakamura hasn't had a memorable match since the first one, at least not one in the level he had in NJPW and Roode hasn't had any on NXT.

DIY vs Authors of Pain. DIY is one of the best tag teams out there, but AoP are green as hell and not ready for the push they have been given. Gargano and Ciampa will have to do a monumental job to have a good match with them and still I don't think it will be on the level of recent tag titles matches.

Asuka vs Nikki Cross vs Billie Kay vs Peyton Royce. Love me some Peyton every day, but I don't know how to feel about this match. I know Asuka is good, but the other 3 haven't had matches longer than 5 minutes on NXT and usually multi man (or women) matches are messy.

Eric Young vs Tye Dillinger. Tye is over and is charismatic, but he isn't that great of a wrestler tbh. I don't know much aboout EY since I haven't watched TNA, so I don't know how good he is and even if he is good I don't know how much WWE will water him down.

Not added to the card yet but probably is gonna be added soon is Roderick Strong vs Andrade Cien Almas, which funny enough is probably going to be the best match on the card, but I really don't care since they have made an awful job developing the characters.

I hope I'm wrong and they surprise me, but at least on paper it doesn't look good

I like Nakamura, but I just don't care about this match.

I saw this match at the live event last week and it was good. It won't reach The Revival or American Alpha levels of greatness, but it'll do its job.

Asuka worked really well with Peyton and Nikki in a triple threat format with Billie at ringside. I suspect it'll just switch to 2 vs. 1 vs. 1 with Billie officially in the equation, and possibly some dissension teased over who deserves the title more.

Eric Young vs Tye Dillinger. Tye is over and is charismatic, but he isn't that great of a wrestler tbh. I don't know much aboout EY since I haven't watched TNA, so I don't know how good he is and even if he is good I don't know how much WWE will water him down.
I have never cared about Eric Young, even while he was in TNA. Tye just needs to be #10 at the Royal Rumble. I don't give a rat's ass about this match.

This is indeed the most boring Takeover card in awhile, but then again, I haven't been truly excited for a Takeover since Respect in 2015.

I haven't watched because I haven't really had as much interest as I did when guys like Zayn, Owens, Neville, etc were on the show. I think their abilities in giving people characters and compelling storylines are much weaker now than ever, and they don't have as good a roster as previously. Really now I just follow NXT through recaps of the shows.

That being said, on a whole I think this should still be a good to great show when it comes down to the quality of the matches. I just don't have the investment I previously had, which translates to me not caring as much about it.

Seriously, i think the death of dusty really hurt the product. It really is sad when a product with zayn, neville, breeze and tysob as the top guys is more interesting than nakamura abd samoa joe.

HHH can take credit of NxT all he wants. Dusty Rhodes was the real heart of the show.

Yes. I think a big part of it is no Revival on the card. They were in the MOTN of every 2016 Takeover except maybe Dallas imo. DIY are very good and I think they'll get a solid match out of AoP but it's undeniably a huge step down from Revival/DIY and Revival/Alpha.

Roode/Nakamura is meh. I don't expect much. Roode is pretty much a just theme song and Nakamura is bordering on it himself. At least it's in a different arena. If this was in Full Sail it would be 25 minutes of the crowd singing and masturbating to the sound of their own voices.

The F4W does interest me though, simply because there's a real chance that the title changes hands and it's been so long since they've done a multi-man title match. It'll be the first non-squash match for Nikki Cross too and I want to see how they portray her. Equal to Asuka? Will she dominate?

Pretty much guaranteed that's gonna happen anywhere you have this match..

And it will be fucking Glorious.. >:)

Unless they get those freako zombie violinists again.. That was just some weird-assed shit..

I actually think the card looks good on paper, but the build has been pretty lackluster. Two months between Takeovers is really short for the typical NXT style of storytelling, and it hurt even more having what feels like half of those episodes being live event filler to give the talent time off for the holidays. I get the desire to do Takeovers for the "Big 4" ppvs, but that kind of sucks when 3 of those 4 shows fall within the same six month period.

It's possible they're getting the belt off of Nak to get him on the main roster, but if they do that... who faces Roode at the next Takeover? Hero, I guess?

#19 ·
I think it's going to be the other way around actually. Roode will lose next week and leave NXT shortly after while Nakamura faces Hero in Orlando and drops. One way or another I think both men will be gone by the summer. Roode just turned 40 so it makes zero sense not to rocket him to Raw or Smackdown straight away.

With Joe, Nakamura and Roode gone though, who would Hero even feud with?

In the very least they should have kept the Hero (re)debut surprise to cap off the show to give the fans something to talk about because this card will be lacking to be sure. There is no real hype for this Takeover.

Nak vs Onho has to be the WM Weekend Takeover Main Event, after which Nak gets his promotion. No way Roode vs Hero moves the needle at all.

I think it's more likely that Roode loses at Takeover and maybe even debuts at the Rumble. I mean seriously, I really bet on Hero vs Nakamura at Takeover Mania. At which point Nakamura will be defeated and on to the Main, where I'd really really try to debut him in a random match on the Mania Card. A debut match like Cody got at WrestleKingdom.

This means Roode will have nothing to do, so I'd just go ahead and send him to the Main. It's just not necessary for him to be there. There's really nothing they can teach these veterans that they really don't know except how to do less in the ring(WWE style).

As for Takeover, yeah it kinda looks weak on paper. I still expect some great matches, which is all that matters to Wrestling fans like me. The rise of Takeover to the detriment of NXT fans and WWE Marks is that the quality of Wrestling is what got it over. Thus the quality of the Wrestling is all that matters. I very rarely watch NXT.

Nakamura vs Roode: Old fashioned Wrestling booking could have built this up better. Book them to have great matches against opponents of equal caliber on the NXT show. Let them show off and tear the house down in these matches. Then in the few weeks leading up to Takeover have Tag matches where they engage sparingly, so that fans get a taste of what the match could be. An taste of things to come. NJPW does this well.

I'm just hoping Big Match Nakamura show's up.

Strong vs Almas: Chance to be match of the night if they get 20 minutes. Both are great. Meltzer had it right that WWE bought a bulldog in Almas and have since turned him into a cat. Almas has yet to just have a pure 50/50 Wrestling match of great length to really show off his story in the ring. Strong likewise hasn't been given time. This is a chance for both to shine, and really come out of it looking great.

DIY vs AOP: Could be great or just decent.

Asuka vs Storm vs the other girl vs the other girl: Not saying this is going to happen, but I think the only purpose of this match is to get the belt off Asuka and on to Storm in a way where Asuka doesn't lose. My guess is then Storm will some how fend of Asuka again, and then lose the belt to Athena. Then it will be Athena vs Asuka at Takeover Mania. A variation on possible booking scenario I had some time ago. Then again they could do a triple threat at Mania too between all 3 girls. Still if that is Asuka's final match then it should be a singles. The other two girls will hopefully give their best performance.

Young vs Tye: Poor Tye. LOL!!!

I never really got this theory because even if she did lose the title here she would need to be pinned in the 1 on 1 rematch anyway. Besides, it would be a waste to build her up for over a year then just chicken out of giving the rub to someone. Nah she's definitely getting pinned when the time comes. Considering Asuka's age, giving a younger woman a big rub is probably the sole reason they hired her. It's not like she's going to be some long term prospect or top star on the main roster.

Um, yeah. Pretty much.

I expect Nakamura vs. Roode to deliver in the main event. Even if they don't have a barn burner, they'll make up for it with the atmosphere.

The tag title match is obviously going to be a step down from the last few Takeover matches we've seen but Gargano and Ciampa are great enough to make these big monsters look better than they are. I remember their Dusty Classic match being pretty good.

The women's match has me intrigued but outside of Asuka no one is tested on a big stage. It could be a lot of fun. Or it could be a clusterfuck.

And then you have Dillinger vs. Young and Strong vs. Almas who I can't say are lighting the world on fire.

Most of the matches have a story but again, no story is really lighting the world on fire.

I still expect a good show because in 3 years, we've yet to seen a bad Takeover. So even if ends up being the worst of the bunch, it can still be a good show.

I thought The End was a really boring TakeOver, but looking at this card makes me realize it'll easily become even worse than that :mj4 this just goes to show you how geeky NXT as a whole has become, with the help of a retarded writer named Belcastro that doesn't know how to do his job properly :lmao there are zero stories, not a single character has been established and I can guarantee you, nobody knows who's even wrestling at the show, we only know them because they can put on a "good match" but that's really the least of their problems, fact is no one gives a fuck about any of them because they gave (and continue to give) us no reason to care.

P.S. Unpopular opinion: DIY are nothing special, they got carried hard by the Revival imo.

Such a shame. For the first time since Brooklyn I the main roster will more than likely have the better show.

Roode/Nakamura - This should be a pretty fun match for the most part but I dunno just how good it will be. Feels like Nak peaked in his match with Zayn and I dunno if Roode is the guy to get that extra bit out of him.

DIY/AOP - I reckon this match could end up being better than people will give it credit for but at the same time AOP is so damn green that it'll end up being a sharp contrast in quality from everything we saw in 2016.

Womens Four Way - Hard to truly argue with this one. It was the best possible solution and a great chance to make Asuka actually look beatable for once. There was no way they could have done a 1-1 match unless they did a returnee again.

Tye/Young - Meh. I love Tye and Young is ok but there really is nothing about this match to truly get excited over.

Almas/Strong - Potentially MOTN in terms of quality and unlike the main or even the tag match it doesn't actually have to be any good so both men can just go out there and do what they do best.

People on here make it sound like a bad thing that the main roster show looks stronger. It should. Plus, why do you have to compare? Just watch and enjoy.

I see this as a show a lot of people are going to sleep on, and then be surprised at how good it is. Ideally this show will see some breakout performances in order to establish the new pecking order in NXT. Plus I imagine Kassius Ohno will make his presence felt.

Honestly, the only match I'm truly excited for is Rood vs. Naku.

I am kinda curious to see who wins Tye vs. Eric because I want to know if they're going to actually use Tye as something other than a jobber.

I haven't looked forward to a Takeover show in at least a year. Nakamura and Asuka don't interest me at all, and they're the ones at the top of their respective divisions. Before that we had Finn Balor who really killed the brand for me. Samoa Joe, Bobby Roode, Revival and DIY have sort of kept me interested in a couple things so I try to catch their stuff occasionally, but I don't even think I've watched NXT tv regularly for the last 6 months.

I'll probably give this show a watch to get a little up to date again on the programs but it sounds like a pretty weak card.

Imo nxt started going downhill after takeover brooklyn. Had some cool moments after that such as nakamuras debut and the match with zayn. Revival. But all in all the quality isnt what it used to be. Maybe its because nxt feels like another part of wwe these days. Nxt debuts on the mainroster used to be cool now its just whatever and expected in many ways.
